How the stage is set before the IPL 2022 Mega Auction
We began this new era of Delhi Capitals by announcing our 4 retained players in November, with Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw and Anrich Nortje forming our Fab Four.
This means that we go into the 2022 Auction with 21 player slots to fill, and we can buy a maximum of 7 Overseas players this weekend. A purse of Rs 47.5 crore is available to us, and our travelling party has already arrived in Bengaluru as they build-up to the big event.
What do DC Need?
A big advantage for the DC Men in Blue is that they have covered some crucial bases with the retentions. In the Shaw-stopper, we have an Indian swashbuckling opener capable of giving us the raciest of starts. Pant’s presence means that we have an explosive southpaw to bolster and add variety to the middle-order.
Bapu’s all-round skills ensure we have a quality left-arm spinner who can hit it big in the lower middle order, while Anrich Nortje’s thunderbolts need no introduction as we tick off the luxury of a quality express pacer with his retention.
With the foundation set, DC will go into the Mega Auction looking to fill some important roles that form the hallmark of a successful T20 franchise.
An opener to compliment Prithvi’s playing style is a must, while an able No. 3 capable of controlling the innings will ensure we have a solid top-order with Rishabh at No. 4.
A finisher at No. 5, who can come in and start playing his shots freely from the get-go will certainly go a long way in strengthening our batting prowess. From there on, the focus will switch to versatility and the ability to hit the long ball, as we look for some all-rounders that can support Bapu and can provide us with that perfect balance that any T20 side craves.
With IPL 2022 likely to be played in India, our new squad will require a crop of bowlers who are well versed with bowling conditions in the subcontinent. Some wily spinners capable of holding their own will be key, while pacers with numerous variations and the ability to bowl with the wet ball would ensure the DC bowling attack has all their bases covered.
But it doesn’t end with picking top choices for your Playing XI, does it? In a long tournament like the IPL, it is imperative that a squad is filled with excellent back up choices to take over in case of injuries or a dip in form, and also some X-factor players that can add value as horses for particularly challenging courses.

Although the auction is taking place this weekend, preparations have been on for the mega event for months now. DC’s Head of Talent Search Saba Karim recently revealed how the management has been on the lookout for young domestic talent that can be part of the squad since September.
“We started in September when we prepared a Delhi Capitals Development Side which comprised of players who we felt had had some kind of first-class experience, along with some of the hopefuls who we feel have the potential. We sent the side to play a One-Day tournament in Chandigarh, and we had our scouts monitor their performance.”
Assistant Coach Pravin Amre admits that DC’s purse value will post a unique challenge, but is confident the side has covered their bases going into the auction.
“DC have a challenge, we are going in with a lesser purse of Rs 47.5 Cr. As a coach, we always want a balanced team. The best part we have done is that we have kept 4 key players in our squad. We have done the basics right. Now we want players who can give you more balance. That’s our important goal.”
