A spirited bowling effort led by Axar (2/18) put CSK in some early trouble as they mustered 136/5 on the back of a Rayudu fifty. Gabbar anchored the chase with an attractive 39, before Hettie rose to the occasion with a quickfire cameo to seal a commendable victory.

Of course, a question was posed about the match-up against his mentor and friend MS Dhoni. “Always great learning from him, but right now he's a rival,” replied Rishabh Pant, tongue in cheek. The tone was set for a game between two quality sides with admiration and respect for one another.

Anrich Nortje steamed in on the first ball and cut Ruturaj Gaikwad in half. Some ball that, considering Ruturaj was fresh off a magnificent century in the previous game. He was adjudged LBW off another jaffa on the third ball, but it was overturned on review before Gaikwad slashed a cracking boundary in reply. At the other end, du Plessis got hold of Avesh a couple of times and CSK’s prolific opening pair threatened to dominate once again.
Axar Patel had other plans though, as he got rid of Faf in his first over. Nortje was bowling rockets and he used his pace to get the in-form Gaikwad to balloon one to mid-wicket. Suddenly, the powerplay had turned into a good one for us with CSK 48/2.

Bapu didn’t pay much heed to favourable or unfavourable match-ups and got rid of another aggressive left-hander in Moeen Ali to further dent CSK’s progress. Ashwin joined the party too, foxing Uthappa with one that turned away from him to dismiss him for the 7th time in the tournament, the joint most number of times a bowler has dismissed a particular batter in the IPL.

At 62/4, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni went into damage repair mode with Rayudu finding the odd boundary. With four overs left in the innings and the scoreboard reading 99/4, it was time for both of them to go hard. Ambati Rayudu switched gears to find the boundaries way more regularly, collecting two sixes and three fours from the next three overs bowled by Rabada, Avesh and Nortje.

Rishabh Pant wasn’t going to be kept quiet for long, and he took on the off-spinner Moeen Ali and smashed him over long-on for six off the fifth ball he faced. However, he got out for 15 attempting another big one. A big knock on his birthday wasn’t to be.
Debutant Ripal Patel walked in at number 5. If there were nerves, he didn’t show any. He got to building a partnership with Dhawan at the other end. We’ve seen Ripal’s power at training, but he showed his finesse in his short stint at the crease on debut, cutting Jadeja as late as possible to score his second IPL boundary. The move didn’t pay rich dividends on the night as Thakur cleaned him up early. Alas, Dhawan too lost his wicket to Thakur at the end of the same over sending some scares through the DC camp.

Lady luck added her touch too, with Gowtham dropping a sitter at long on to give Hettie a new life, and he made the most of it.

A double and a wide later, there was some more drama to witness in the final over. Axar drove one straight to cover and Hetmyer was stuck at the non-striker’s end. Rabada took guard with 2 needed from 3, but he only needed one. A leg glance off his pads fetched us four as Hetmyer’s arms went up in celebration before he jumped onto his friend, countryman and rival Dwayne Bravo’s back in sheer joy.
