DD vs CSK: A Team Effort Brings up a Resounding Win

In a Nutshell

MS Dhoni called it right at the toss and sent us in to bat in our penultimate clash. We made a couple changes for this one, Glenn Maxwell came in for Jason Roy and Avesh Khan came in for Junior Dala. Our playing XI consisted of only three overseas professionals, a bold move. Shreyas Iyer put a lot of faith in his Indian contingent.

The Iyer-Pant combination has worked wonders this season, and they put up another good partnership. Things looked bleak after both went back to the pavilion one after the other. But, Vijay Shankar (36* off 28) was solid and Harshal Patel (36* off 16) was ruthless towards the end. The pair got together for 65 runs and gave us much-needed momentum going into the second half of the match.

In the second innings, Rayudu extended his purple patch and brought up another half-century. Nevertheless, he couldn’t convert it into a big one and it cost Chennai. Through the middle overs, Sandeep Lamichhane and Amit Mishra had a stranglehold on the CSK batsmen and the required run rate kept mounting. With 73 needed from the final 7 overs, the DD bowlers conceded just 39. A clinical bowling performance rounded off a commendable 34-run win.

Pant, Patel Shine with the Bat

The captain brought himself up the order and opened the innings with Prithvi Shaw. A couple boundaries flowed off Shaw’s bat, but it was a watchful start with 18 runs coming from the first 3 overs. In the process, we became just the fourth team to hit a hundred maximums this season.

However, Shaw went for one big-hit too many and holed out to long-on. The powerplay produced 39/1. Iyer and Pant have been our most dependable pair, and they got to consolidating and made sure we didn’t lose two quick wickets. Pant teed off in the tenth over, taking Harbhajan for 17 runs. At the halfway mark, we’d made 77/1.

Unfortunately, after a 54-run stand, both of them departed in quick succession. Lungi Ngidi found and disturbed Iyer’s stumps, and had Pant caught at third man a couple balls later for 38. Glenn Maxwell hasn’t found his feet this VIVO IPL, and he headed back to the dressing room early again. The 17-year-old Abhishek Sharma, who had an excellent first outing, couldn’t quite work the same magic in this game as he got out for 2. Suddenly, DD had lost half their side for 97 runs.

Vijay Shankar scored a fighting century the last time we met the Chennai Super Kings, and another important knock from him was the need of the hour to resurrect our innings.

But, it wasn’t just Shankar who revived our innings. Harshal Patel played a massive hand. Both Shankar and Patel got going and landed a few big blows in their 65-run stand from just 5.2 overs. The final over alone produced 26 runs as Harshal Patel launched three big ones over the ropes. He finished with a brilliant 16-ball 36. We needed a very good finish to the innings, and the duo provided just that to power us to a competitive 162/5.

Leggies Turn Tides in our Favour

Sandeep Lamichhane took the new ball again, this time in the second over and gave away just two runs. In fact, all our bowlers were right on the money in the first five overs, conceding just 22 runs. In the final powerplay over however, Avesh Khan lost his way and let another 22 runs slip. In the end, it was a decent powerplay for CSK with 44 runs coming off it and no wickets lost.

Like he so often does, Amit Mishra came into the attack and changed the course of the game. The 7th over produced the big wicket of Shane Watson and just 2 runs. Ambati Rayudu is in the form of his life, and he was going along his merry ways at the other end. He brought up yet another fifty but was dismissed in the same over. CSK required 93 runs off the final 10 overs.

As Raina and MS Dhoni played themselves in, the run rate crept up to over 10 with 73 required from 7 overs. Then, Raina departed off the first ball of Lamichhane’s third over. The game was back in the balance.

It was a great period with the ball for DD as both the leggies, Mishra and Sandeep stemmed the flow of runs and picked up timely wickets. Only 4 runs came from these two overs. What’s more? The overs produced the wickets of Raina and Billings.

Amit Mishra and Sandeep Lamichhane finished with figures of 4-0-20-2 and 4-0-21-1 respectively, both absolutely vital spells through the middle overs. Harshal Patel had himself a night with both bat and ball. With CSK needing 58 from 24 balls, Patel conceded a scarcely believable 3 runs in the 17th over.

A quiet 18th over followed a quiet 17th, and the game was well and truly in our grasp. 50 runs were required from 12 balls after Dhoni departed, an uphill task. The DD bowlers made no mistakes and we brought up a resounding win against one of top teams in the competition.
