DD vs MI: DD Spoil MI’s Party

In a Nutshell

In our last game this season, Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first. We went into the game with one change – Plunkett came in for Avesh Khan.

The first three overs produced 30 runs for no loss. Thereafter, we lost both our openers, Shaw and Maxwell, in quick succession. It was sheer carelessness from Shaw, and he would like to forget this dismissal. Glenn Maxwell on the other hand, would like to forget this season. He got off to a good start (22 off 18) but couldn’t convert it yet again. Rishabh Pant put on a display of unorthodoxy and brilliance for his 64 off 44 balls. He finished his season atop the list for most runs, most sixes and most fours. This just goes to show how dominating he has been throughout this VIVO IPL. Vijay Shankar anchored the latter half of the innings and finished it well to get us to 174/4.

Despite a wicket in the first over, Evin Lewis got the Mumbai Indians off to a flier. However, things went downhill after his dismissal. MI suffered a mini-collapse, losing Lewis and Pollard off consecutive deliveries, and Krunal Pandya a couple deliveries later. Hardik Pandya and Ben Cutting launched counter-attacks, but it wasn’t enough. The stars of the show were our wrist spinners, Amit Mishra and Sandeep Lamichhane, who combined for 6/55 from their eight overs.

Pant’s Genius, Vijay’s Resolve

Glenn Maxwell opened alongside Prithvi Shaw in our last encounter and we started off the blocks quickly, with five boundaries and a total of 30 runs in the first three overs. However, a lapse in concentration cost Shaw his wicket. Maxwell played one to point, took a start and went back. Shaw however, was ambling back to his crease and didn’t expect the direct hit to come his way.

Maxwell got off to a decent start. But, he tried to maximise the outcome from the powerplay and perished in that endeavour for 22 off 18 balls. The second half of the powerplay produced just 16/2 as opposed to the 30/0 that came from the first three. The 7th over by Markande cost MI 14 runs as Rishabh Pant skillfully pulled one for four and carted one over mid-wicket for six. We went into the first strategic time-out with 60/2 on the board.

Shreyas Iyer had a great first half of the tournament but hasn’t played as well as he’d like in the last few games. He got out for 6 trying to pull a rank long-hop. As Pant and Shankar got going, DD hit the 100-run mark in the middle of the 13th over. A big finish was required.

Rishabh Pant has had a phenomenal season, and this game was no different. In the 15th over, he took a Mustafizur Rahman delivery from outside off and launched it over long-on for six, one handed. In the same over, he brought up yet another fifty. He wasn’t done. The next ball he faced from Hardik Pandya, he switched hands, changed positions, and hit one over third man for six. That 16-run over had another one-handed Pant six! The man is a genius.

He got out caught at long on in the following over, but he’d propelled us to a comfortable position with his 64 off 44.

Abhishek Sharma and Vijay Shankar got into their groove and scored 34 runs in the final three overs. Vijay’s unbeaten 43 was just the push DD required to finish with a fighting 174/4 in their 20 overs. It was onto the bowlers to defend this and spoil MI’s party.

Leggies Spin a Web

Sandeep Lamichhane started off with two short balls that went the distance but came back to claim the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav in the same over. Trent Boult bowled a 1-run second over. But, overs 4 and 5 produced 34 runs as Harshal Patel and Glenn Maxwell leaked three fours and three sixes between them. It was a solid powerplay for the Mumbai Indians with the scoreboard reading 57/1.

Amit Mishra came into the attack in the 7th over and got the breakthrough first ball! Ishan Kishan danced down the track and smashed it to long on as Vijay Shankar pulled off a good catch inches from the boundary ropes. Mishra could have had Pollard for naught in the same over, had Prithvi Shaw held onto the catch at slip.

Amit Mishra foxed Evin Lewis with his wrong‘un to pick his second wicket. Rishabh Pant completed the work behind the wickets with a lightning-quick stumping. MI then lost two wickets in two balls, as Glenn Maxwell and Trent Boult combined to pull off an absolute stunner on the boundary ropes to send Pollard back to the pavilion. Sandeep Lamichhane wasn’t done. Krunal Pandya drove one straight to cover as Sandeep claimed his third wicket, and his second in the same over.

DD were making their way back into the game, MI were losing their way.

Despite having already lost half their side, Hardik Pandya launched a counter-attack. The 12th and 13th overs saw 30 runs coming from them. After 13 overs, MI were 116/5 with 59 runs required from 42 balls.

Danger man Rohit Sharma went back into the hut after Maxwell and Boult got together for a catch ever so similar to the stunner they held earlier. Déjà vu, anyone?

Amit Mishra was bowling a lovely spell, and he continued to do so to send Hardik Pandya packing. He finished his spell with figures of 4-0-19-3. The veteran had brought his A-game against MI. Lamichhane bowled an excellent 16th over, giving away just 4 runs, and kept the pressure going.

With 38 runs required from three overs, Ben Cutting cut loose. The first three deliveries read 4,6,4 to bring the equation down to 24 from 15 balls. The game was there for either of the teams to take.

The penultimate over was a Boult special. Only five runs came from the 19th to leave Mumbai to get 18 runs from the final over. Ben Cutting whacked the first one into the stands and Harshal Patel got him off the second ball. The game was never short of drama!

With Bumrah and Mustafizur at the crease, 12 off 4 was a tall order. With another wicket from the next ball, MI were out of wickets and out of the race to get into the Playoffs. With this 11-run win, DD had ended a disappointing season on a high with two wins on the trot.
