Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians
24th March 2019, 08:00 PM IST
Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India
Match overview:
With just hours left for 2019 IPL to kickstart, the excitement level of fans is over the roof. The thrill, the international cricket superstars, the massive sixes, the goosebumps, and the intense drama of the most loved domestic T20 extravaganza is set to hog the limelight once again.
Our squad has a new look, a new name, and has witnessed a major overhaul. We made as many as 10 buys during the auctions. The talismanic Shikhar Dhawan was also roped in during the transfers to bolster the strength of our batting line-up.
We will be locking horns against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on March 24 to play our opener of IPL 2019.
The pitch at Wankhede offers movement for the fast bowlers. However, the ball comes nicely onto the bat as well. Our opening match is sure to be an entertainer as Mumbai Indians also have an extremely competitive unit.
Head to Head:
We share a special rivalry with Mumbai Indians. Looking at the stats, there is absolutely nothing separating us. Out of the 22 matches played, MI won 11 while we were triumphant in the other 11. The boys are eager to turn the tide in our favour in our 23rd meeting with the Mumbai Indians.
Form Guide (most recent to oldest - in IPL 2018):
Delhi Capitals: W W L L L
Mumbai Indians: L W L W W
Key Players To Watch Out For:
Firstly, let us take a look at the players who have been in scintillating form in our line-up.
Our top-order batsman Colin Ingram has been in great nick. The Port Elizabeth-born player amassed 344 runs in 11 matches in a recently concluded T20 league. What's more - he was striking at a belligerent rate of 164.59. If Ingram can continue the same form, then it will give us a major boost.
Left-arm pacer Kagiso Rabada has done phenomenally well for South Africa in the recent past. The 23-year-old clinched a total of 8 wickets in the 4 ODIs he played against Sri Lanka and was economical as well. He adds the firepower to our pace attack.
It has been great to reunite with Shikhar Dhawan ahead of IPL 2019. The southpaw hails from Delhi itself and is looking to give it his all for in his second stint with us. Dhawan has been brilliant in the nets as well and has been timing the ball sweetly.
There are a few dazzling players in the Mumbai Indians line-up as well - on whom we must keep a close eye on.
The first is Quinton de Kock. Mumbai’s WK-batter is their favourite option to open the innings along with Rohit Sharma. The Johannesburg-born player has rarely put a wrong foot forward in the recent past. Runs are flowing through his bat and he has also been good behind the stumps. Quinton accumulated a total of 353 runs (including 3 fifties and a century) in the 5 ODIs played against Sri Lanka in March. He also took a total of 7 catches and made a stumping as well.
Our speedsters will need to get rid of de Kock early on or he may cause some serious damage.
Jasprit Bumrah is currently the top-ranked bowler in ODIs (as per ICC). The Indian speedster is 16th on the list when it comes to T20Is. Bumrah made a total of 7 scalps in the 5 ODIs India played against the Aussies in March. We need to be aware of him as he has the ability to bowl pin-point yorkers and will certainly play a major role in the death overs.
Final Thoughts:
There is a lot of flexibility in our Tigers’ squad - A wide range of dynamic batsmen who can play at multiple positions, specialist spinners such as Amit Mishra, and veteran speedsters like Ishant Sharma and Trent Boult.
Speaking about the DC’s new journey, Coach Ricky Ponting emphasized, “We sat down and worked through what we did well last year. The work for every IPL season for a team starts 6 months in advance. With the current composition, we have a really different vibe this time around”.
The core of the team is extremely strong and overall - a well-balanced unit on paper. It will be a smooth ride for us if the opposition fails to keep a tab on our Indian batsmen. Even if any two of Dhawan, Iyer, Pant, or Shaw get going - then they can wreak havoc against MI.
On the other hand, Mumbai Indians have a solid squad as well. Especially their all-rounders - Kieron Pollard, Ben Cutting, and the Pandya brothers - promise to set the stage on fire.
We look forward to a fierce battle against MI our inaugural match.
