Delhi Capitals Look To Bounce Back With A Win Against Mumbai Indians

Punjab Kings beating Kolkata Knight Riders meant we booked our third consecutive playoffs berth in the IPL. Although we lost our last game, there were many positives to take from the KKR clash as Ricky Ponting pointed out. The DC Men in Blue will look to learn from that loss, and celebrate their qualification with a statement victory against the tournament’s most successful franchise, the Mumbai Indians.

The Delhi vs Mumbai rivalry has been one of the hallmarks of the IPL. Although we have struggled against Rohit Sharma’s men in the past, we broke the shackles earlier this season as Amit Mishra’s heroics guided us to a comprehensive 6 wicket win in Chennai.

On the eve of the game, Assistant Coach Mohammad Kaif gave an insight into the camp’s mood ahead of the titanic clash against Mumbai Indians.

"The key focus for us in the match against Mumbai Indians will be our batting. Whether we bat first or second, we have to bat well. Mumbai is a great team to play against. All the players are always excited to play against Mumbai Indians. We have performed well collectively this season. Different players are stepping up in different matches and situations. We are lucky to have so many match-winners and hopefully, someone will stand up for the team again in the match against Mumbai."

Time for a Statement Victory

The Mumbai Indians clash comes at the best possible time for DC. Beating the two-time defending champions will be the perfect way to put the KKR loss behind us and build up momentum come the business end of the tournament.

Having already played a game in Sharjah, Rishabh Pant and Co. will be better equipped to deal with the challenges of a wicket that has been the slowest of the 3 venues in UAE.

Our all-star batting line-up will look to use the experience from the KKR game, and expect a show of intent when we take to the field on Saturday. As always, the DC bowling unit ensures there’s never an easy moment for the opposition batsmen, and expect more of the same when the latest iteration of the Delhi vs Mumbai rivalry kicks off!

Stat Attack

Gabbar needs just 32 more runs to overtake Suresh Raina and become the leading run-getter vs Mumbai Indians in IPL. The CSK southpaw is currently top of the charts with 824 runs against MI.

If Ravichandran Ashwin manages to dismiss Kieron Pollard, he will become the most successful bowler against the MI stalwart in IPL. Currently, The Master and Yuzvendra Chahal have dismissed Pollard four times each in the competition.

Amit Mishra was adjudged the Man of the Match the last time we played MI, ending with a four-fer as he ripped through the batting line-up. If Mishi bhai takes to the field on Saturday, he will become the first player in the history of the franchise to feature in 100 IPL games.

Key Battles

Ravichandran Ashwin vs Quinton de Kock

Ash’s proficiency against left-handers is no hidden secret, and the Master could once again come into play in the powerplay. He has dismissed Quinton de Kock 4 times in 8 games, and don’t be surprised if he gets us an early breakthrough at Sharjah.

The Magician vs Boom Boom

Shreyas Iyer has impressed with the bat in UAE and will look to put down another marker against MI’s spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. The duo could face off at multiple stages in the game, and Shreyas’ strike rate of 148.57 against the MI pacer will certainly come in handy when they do.

Bapu vs Hitman

The captain has led from the front for MI this season, with Rohit Sharma the side’s most prolific batsman with 334 runs in IPL 2021. Getting him out early will be key in Sharjah, and who better than our Bapu to get one over Hitman. Axar has conceded just 33 runs in 44 balls while dismissing Rohit twice in IPL, and there’s no better time to dismiss him for the third time in a clutch game like Saturday’s.
