DC vs RCB in 50 Words
After a successful powerplay for DC, outstanding innings by Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik lifted RCB to a good total. The chase started well with Warner’s fiery fifty, but it all went downhill from the middle to the death as the Royal Challengers took the game away.
A Tale of Two Halves
In the first match of the season for the DC boys at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and put the Royal Challengers in to bat first. There was just one change on our side, with Aussie all-rounder Mitchell Marsh coming in for Sarfaraz to make his DC debut.
The DC speedsters got off to a great start. Both the RCB openers were found back in the dugout within the first three overs. Lord Shardul struck on his very first ball, dismissing Anuj Rawat with an in-swinger right onto the pads, while RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis was dismissed cheaply in the next over, courtesy of Khaleel Ahmed.
When Lalit Yadav covered quick ground at backward point and ran Virat Kohli out with an acrobatic diving direct hit, RCB were well and truly on the back foot.
As he so often does, Maxwell counter-attacked and took the pressure off RCB by targeting one of our lead bowlers, scoring 23 off Kuldeep Yadav’s very first over. But soon after his blistering half-century, Kuldeep had the last laugh by dismissing the Big Show and giving away only 23 runs from his next three overs.
Despite the game being seemingly under our control after the wicket of dangerous Maxwell, RCB finishers Dinesh Karthik and Shabaz Ahmed managed to put on a 97-run stand in the last 8 overs. DK took the attack to our bowlers and played a blitz (66* off 34 balls) that helped RCB put on a good total on the board.
David Warner Shines But Chase Fizzles Out
Chasing 190, David Warner got us off to an amazing start with a slog sweep for six over mid-wicket off the very first delivery he faced.
The openers managed to provide yet another solid foundation with another 50-run partnership off just 28 balls. Alas, we lost Shaw to a mistimed pull shot off a short delivery from Siraj.
Warner was still going strong as he landed one lusty blow after another and got to a 29-ball fifty. It was the southpaw’s 2nd consecutive fifty in IPL 2022, and he also broke the record for the most 50+ scores against RCB in the history of the tournament.
At the other end however, Mitchell Marsh wasn’t having the best of returns to the IPL after injury and found it difficult to get the boundaries. David Warner was trapped in front of the stumps off an attempted reverse sweep in the 12th over. It was just the breakthrough that Hasranga and RCB were looking for to further assert their hold on the game.
Skipper Pant came into bat at a situation where DC still had a mountain to climb with 97 runs needed in a little over 8 overs. Pant did find quick boundaries, but the unfortunate run-out off Hasaranga’s fingers onto the stumps at the non-striker’s end summed up Marsh’s night.
From there, Rovman Powell and Lalit Yadav were dismissed in quick succession as Hazlewood’s double-wicket over further derailed the chase.
RP17 and Lord Shardul however, were not going to go down without a fight. The following over from Hasranga saw Lord Shardul hitting his first delivery for a six, followed by a boundary and a maximum from the southpaw. With those boundaries, Rishabh Pant broke another monumental record, that of the most runs scored in the IPL before turning 25. The maverick went past Virat Kohli’s record of 2632 runs, and still has the entire season to add to that tally.
A one-handed blinder from Virat Kohli in the covers to dismiss Pant for 34 runs turned out to be a telling blow, as the game started slipping further and further away from our grasp with the RCB bowlers hitting the right lengths at the death.
The chase fizzled out and RCB took home a 16-run victory. Rest assured, the DC tigers will go back to the drawing board and come back roaring on the 20th for the Northern Derby against Punjab Kings.
