Letters from UAE by Shreyas Iyer | Letter #3

Wrapped in a digital bottle in the oasis of Dream11 IPL, Shreyas pens down some magic for you, in yet another sleight of hand.

So much has happened since the last time I put down my thoughts here. But an amazing and blissful outing to a private beach just a couple of days back has helped me press the refresh button in my brain!

We’re in the third week of the IPL, and four wins from five games so far for us – now which captain wouldn’t be happy with that! It felt a bit odd in the first game, to be honest, to get used to the match day environment. I’d watched the CSK vs MI game on TV, but wasn’t sure how it was going to be when we step out for our season opener. It’s quite odd to see no spectators, but the organisers have done their best to recreate a stadium-like environment with the chants, and the videos of fans and their waving flags on screens around the ground.

Speaking of flags, we’re lucky to see a bunch of blue Delhi Capitals flags at all our games, thanks to our owners, members of the management and even our net bowlers – who all turn into cheerleaders, come match day! Our biggest and loudest cheerleader is our team’s throwdown specialist, Ishwar, by the way. Whether it’s a single or a six, and no matter which position you’re fielding in – Ishwar’s loud voice and cheering is bound to reach your ears, and you can’t miss him waving a big blue flag in the stands.

After two very contrasting wins in Dubai, Abu Dhabi was a different experience altogether in so many ways. It was going to be a 2 hour long bus trip, so we filled our water bottles and carried pillows along, to be comfortable. The ground was large, and we hadn’t had an opportunity to check it out even once before this. But we’ve learnt our lessons, and will be better prepared when we’re back there next. Rest and recovery are going to be key this IPL. Luckily there’s no flight travel every few days, which means there’s enough time to recharge the batteries.

The win against KKR in Sharjah is such a mixed bag my memories. While I was happy with my batting, the body cramps in the challenging weather was a bummer. And just when we were elated to have Ash back in the playing eleven after his freak injury in the first game, Mishy bhai hurt his ring finger badly. It was no doubt one of the most emotional moments for us as a team, when we got to know that he would have to miss the rest of the season. His contribution in the season so far had been stellar, and he is going to be missed immensely.

We wish him a speedy recovery, as we gear up for our next clash. Hope you’re going have your cheer gear out for us, as always!
