The much-awaited discussion on the venue of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 has been put to rest by BCCI, as the board confirmed India to be the hosts of the league. The Committee of Administrators (CoA), through a meeting on Tuesday, has come to the conclusion that the IPL will take place in India, with a tentative commencement date of March 23.
The CoA meeting, which took place in Delhi, decided to prepone IPL than its usual start in early April keeping in mind the elections and the ICC Cricket World Cup to take place later this year. The entire schedule is yet to be finalized.
"We will have all the primary venues backed up by alternate venues in case there is a need to shift matches. This will be done in consultation with central and state government authorities as well as security agencies," PTI reported CoA chairman Vinod Rai as saying.
"The specific reason for having a back-up venue is to ensure that we don't have any issue if there is polling or recounting or PM's rally in any of the states once the election dates are announced," he added.
This will be the first time in nine years that IPL will start in the month of March. However, to settle the entire schedule, BCCI will have to wait for the approval of government bodies concerned.
"Once we chalk out the itinerary, we will get the dates and venues cleared by various govt agencies," Rai said.
It is learnt that the decision has been taken keeping in mind the logistical issues which may have occurred if transferred to a different country.
