From delectable street food to any international platter, the national capital never disappoints. Delhi is a melting pot of many cultures and this holds true for food where many delicacies which originated from all parts of the country have acquired a unique Dilli twist.

Similarly, 'New Punjabi Khana' in Nehru Place market has been serving the best of Punjabi cuisine since the past 36 years. Though Nehru Place is better known as one of India's biggest electronic markets, for some foodies, it is also the best place to have Punjabi food in the city.

Started by Rishi Sharma's grandfather Late Rajendra Sharma in the year 1984, the shop was initially named as 'Standard Punjabi Khana', later in 2015-16, they changed it to 'New Punjabi Khana'.

The popular offerings here are Shahi Paneer, Rajma Chawal and Punjabi Curry. It is a popular lunch spot for nearby corporates in Nehru Place. There are many loyal patrons who have been regulars since the beginning, first being served different generations of Rishi’s family. The longevity of the business is evident by the change of menu prices over the years, from Rs. 2-3 per plate when they started to Rs. 80-85 at present.

"We still have customers who have been coming since three generations--first they got served by my grandfather, then by my father, and now they are being served by me", said Rishi Sharma.

Unfortunately, the lockdown has had a huge impact on their business. With a loss of the office going customers in the vicinity, and people being wary of eating, the footfall has been slow to pick up. Next time, you are craving a delicious Punjabi lunch, get #VocalforLocal and head to New Punjabi Khana.
