Our incredible 2019 season comes to an end following CSK’s win!

THE SETTING

After brushing aside SRH in the Eliminator, we were up against three-time IPL Champions Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier 2.

The atmosphere was electric as fans of both teams were buzzing at the ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vizag. Dhoni won the toss and put us in to bat.

NOT THE IDEAL START

Our openers, Shaw and Dhawan, had been giving us fantastic starts in the powerplay. However, it wasn't meant to be in the crucial Qualifier 2. The young Prithvi was back in the hut in the third over after scoring 5. Gabbar was looking in good nick but was caught behind off Harbhajan's bowling in the 6th over.

At the end of the powerplay, our scorecard read 41/2.

THE MIDDLE OVERS

It was imperative to play smartly after losing two early wickets on. Munro played a good hand of 27 off 24 before perishing in the 9th over.

Imran Tahir got the wicket of skipper Iyer in the 12th over. Furthermore, Axar Patel fell to Bravo in the 13th over.

The situation called for the boys to be cool, calm, and collected.

THE STABILIZERS

Rishabh Pant and Sherfane Rutherford were out in the middle. We needed them to build a smart partnership to get us to a competitive total.

They understood the job at hand was to rotate the strike and keep wickets at the death. We were 93/5 with five overs remaining.

THE BLAZING FINISH

Rutherford set the tone and broke the shackles by smashing Harbhajan for a six, our first of the night. We lost him in the same over as he went for another maximum.

Tahir was given a beating in his last over by Rishabh - who smashed him for a four and a six. He played with maturity and anchored the inning. It would have been great had he stayed till the end, but he was back in the hut after scoring 38 from 25.

Regardless, we capitalized in the last over. Trent and Ishant smashed Jadeja for 16 runs and took us to a fightable total of 147/9 in 20 overs. We got 54 runs in the last five overs.

THE DRAMATIC START

Our bowlers started off extremely well. We got a glorious opportunity to get a wicket in the first over itself. There was utter confusion between Faf and Watson. Both the batsmen were in the middle of the pitch after plenty of stutters, and yes and no's. Axar threw the ball at the bowler’s end where Munro collected the ball. Furthermore, the New Zealander waywardly threw at the batting end. This was a major let off early on.

Nevertheless, we put pressure on the CSK batsmen. Ishant and Trent bowled tight lines and restricted the opposition to just 16 runs in the first 4 overs. However, Faf got going we leaked 26 runs in the next two overs. At the end of the powerplay, CSK's scoreboard read 42 for no loss.

TWO QUICK WICKETS

CSK were cruising now with Watson also joining the party. The duo put together 39 runs in the next 4 overs. The Chennai-based franchise was 81/0 at the end of 10 overs.

We really needed a breakthrough now. And Trent Boult got us exactly that in the 11th over. Faf was caught by Keemo at deep square-leg. Our speedster bowled a tight over as he gave away just 1 run and took a wicket.

Watson got to his fifty by smashing Keemo two sixes and two fours in the 12th over before Mishra got the dangerous Aussie opener in the very next over.

THE LAST RIDE

Axar Patel got Raina's wicket in the 16th over and MS Dhoni joined Rayudu in the middle. The opposition skipper didn't last long and Ishant Sharma got his wicket in the 19th over. However, it was a case of too little too late. CSK chased down the total in 19 overs.

Heartbreak for us as we looked to create history by reaching the finals of VIVO IPL 2019. Our boys tried hard, but it just did not click on the day. However, we end the season with lots of positives. Our team showed immense determination and fight in both, home and away games. A big thank you to all our fans for their relentless support. Until the next time, keep the roars high and keep your support for DC going strong!

THE QUOTE

"It's a good learning for us at this stage. We've had a great season. I am proud of the way the boys have played. I really love the way we have gelled up as a family. This is just the start." - Shreyas Iyer
