Impressed by his performances in Indian Premier League 2017 and in the international circuit with the Indian Cricket Team, Delhi Daredevils extended their faith in young-gun Shreyas Iyer for another year.
Just one month in and it’s been a long campaign for Shreyas Iyer in the IPL 2018 – a month full of ups and downs. The youngster had an indifferent start to the season with the Delhi franchise, something he wouldn’t have hoped for, amassing only 42 runs in his first four matches. His scores read 11, 0*, 27*, 4 and was synonymous to the poor run of results obtained by his team.
But his fortunes changed as he led the Daredevils’ batting line from the front, notching back-to-back 50s vs RCB and Kings XI Punjab respectively in the process. Since the game against KKR, he has scored 309 runs in 6 matches. A complete turnaround for the young player.

On 25th April, when Gautam Gambhir stepped down as captain, the burden was put on the young shoulders of Shreyas Iyer to lead a side struggling to find a win. With only one win in six matches, it was a massive task to turn things around. But, Shreyas has showed his capabilities by leading a mini-revival recently.
Since he was made captain, Delhi Daredevils have gone on to win two of the three matches they have played. The team has posted 190+ scores in all three matches and have seen a slight improvement in their bowling attack.
On his appointment, coach Ricky Ponting showcased full confidence to the youngster as he said, "He is a terrific young player. He is a terrific young man. I see a huge future for him in the game. It's my job now, and Gautam's job, and all the players' job, to make Shreyas' job as easy as possible on the field. A big part of coaching is making sure that the captain gets everything he needs to be prepared for the challenge. There is no extra pressure on Shreyas Iyer. We want him to go out and play the way he is playing. He has been playing terrifically well."
The responsibility of being captain hasn’t deterred his batting capabilities, as he posted 93* and 50 in the two victories under his stewardship vs Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals respectively.
His breezing innings of 93 not-out in 40 balls vs Kolkata Knight Riders was the highest score on captaincy debut in the IPL. Especially considering that the opposition boasted spinners like Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla it was an impressive knock under pressure. This also helped Delhi Daredevils to their highest total of the season, 219-4.

As Shreyas later revealed, he wanted to impose his game on the opposition attack. "Playing Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla wasn't that difficult for me because I have played them in domestic circuit as well," stated Shreyas. "But Sunil Narine I had prepared for. Majority of his deliveries nowadays is off spin. I was prepared for it. I wouldn't say I picked him properly, but I did execute against him the way I wanted to. Yeah, he is that kind of bowler who could change the game. Back-to-back wickets could have put us in trouble."
Delhi Daredevils will be looking to end their final four games with wins under their belt and keep fighting considering they are mathematically able to get into the qualifiers. Shreyas Iyer will be crucial in this aspect through both his captaincy and his batting ability to lead from the front.
