DC vs KKR in 50 Words
50 words? For the longest time after the match, it was difficult to find even one. Prithvi Shaw had left us speechless with a spellbinding knock of 82 from 41.
Spin-Twins A̶s̶h̶w̶i̶n̶ ̶&̶ ̶M̶i̶s̶h̶r̶a̶ Lalit & Axar Cause KKR Trouble
Rishabh Pant was getting the tosses to go his way, never a bad knack for a captain. DC put KKR in to bat, and made one change for the game with Lalit Yadav replacing Amit Mishra who was out with some shoulder trouble.
Ishant and Rabada kept the KKR openers quiet for the first three overs, before the first change bowler, Axar Patel struck early to dismiss Nitish Rana thanks to a lightning quick Rishabh Pant stumping.

Gill and Tripathi made a push with a few boundaries to get the powerplay score to 45/1. The other spinner in the line-up, Lalit Yadav was brought into the attack right after the powerplay. Apart from the one six, the spinners gave absolutely nothing away. The pressure that was built took a toll on the KKR batsmen and Rahul Tripathi holed out at sweeper off Stoinis just before the halfway mark.
Lalit Yadav came in for the 11th over and broke the back of the KKR middle-order, getting rid of Captain Morgan and Sunil Narine in the same over, the second delivery an absolute worldie that beat Narine’s outside edge and castled him at pace.

Avesh Khan was having another top night, nailing his inch-perfect yorkers and also changing it up with slower balls. One of those deceived Shubman Gill as he was dismissed for 43. KG was brought back for this third over immediately after the wicket, and you know who was at the other end.
After a miserly 14th over, Dre Russ and DK had to go for it. They each connected a maximum before Axar accounted for DK too. Bapu’s 100th IPL game wasn’t going too badly, was it?

17 overs into the innings and 112/6 on the board, unfortunately we had to witness a (mini) Russell Mania. The penultimate over from Rabada went for 18, with Russell pummelling two biggies and a four. As DC fans, we weren’t used to the Rabada vs Russell battle going the latter’s way.
With a six off the final ball, Russell ended up with with an unbeaten 45 from 27 balls and lifted KKR up to 154/6 from their 20 overs.

When Shivam Mavi bowled the first delivery of the chase wide of Shaw to put DC’s first run on the board, little did anyone know Shaw would go on to add 24 more to the scoreboard from the first six legal deliveries of the innings. As always, Shaw began with crystal clear intent as the first ball which was pitched up was lofted straight over the bowler’s head for four.

What followed could easily have been a montage from a sports movie. The second ball went past mid-wicket with some whippage from Shaw, two balls went past cover, one more past point and the final one was driven confidently on the up for the 6th boundary of the over. Six boundaries in an over in the IPL - A feat only achieved previously in the IPL by Ajinkya Rahane.

It was an eventful first over to say the least, but the carnage had just begun. Before the end of the second over, Shaw had got to 31. The very next ball, Dhawan reminded us that he was at the crease too with a gorgeous cover drive. Sunil Narine came on for the fourth over and he was taken apart as well.
The powerplay total of 67 was the highest this season so far, and one over after the powerplay, Shaw notched up an 18-ball half-century, breaking more records for the night.

It didn’t matter if it was the pace of Mavi, Prasidh and Cummins or the mystery spin of Varun and Narine, our openers, especially Shaw, were making light work of the attack. Dhawan used Cummins’ pace to guide the ball to ropes through square, and Shaw took him on and lofted him in the V. Shaw danced down the track and smashed Varun straight, while Dhawan cut him firmly through backward point. The difference was only in the approach, but the boundaries were coming thick and fast.

When Dhawan finally got out in the 14th over, quashing DC fans’ hopes of a 10-wicket win, he had more done his job with 46. He’d also gone past Suresh Raina to take the second spot on the list of IPL’s all-time leading run-scorers. No prizes for guessing who the Best Supporting Act award went to.
Rishabh Pant joined Shaw at the crease, and he’d gotten the memo. He went after Prasidh almost immediately, muscling a four and a maximum. However, Shaw perished for 82 off 41 in an attempt to put another white Kookaburra into the stands. He had bossed the chase in trademark Shaw fashion.

Rishabh Pant tried to finish it off with a six but got caught in the deep. It didn’t matter though, as Stoinis finished the game off with 21 balls remaining, and with the perfect tribute to the man who absolutely owned the Thursday night at Ahmedabad - A four.
So, enjoyed the Thursday Night Shaw from your home? 😋 #YehHaiNayiDilli #DCvKKR #IPL2021
