Mayank Markande who shot to limelight with his first IPL wicket – a wrong one that trapped CSK skipper MS Dhoni and left him stunned, started his career as a fast bowler in Bathinda, Punjab. Markande who was well versed with his ‘back-of-the-hand’ slower ones during his Under-14 pace bowling days, was always at the receiving end of his coach Munish Bali’s advice of switching to a spin bowler. The coach was proved right, when Markande impressed the Mumbai Indian’s talent scouts during the pre-auction trials in early 2018.
During his Under-16 days in 2013-14, Markande debuted for Punjab in the Vijay Merchant trophy grabbing 29 wickets in the series at an average of 18.24. In the year 2017-18, he made his T20 debut for Punjab in the Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy. In the same year when he was selected to play in the Punjab team for the Vijay Hazare trophy, he was picked by Mumbai Indians for Rs 20 lakhs. He proved that his auction value was far higher, with a magnificent debut against CSK and then clinching a four-fer against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Markande dominated the IPL 2018 purple cap holders list for most of the season.
Having launched into the skies of glory in IPL 2018, Markande had his doors open into the senior state team for the Ranji trophy 2018-19. He was the leading wicket taker for Punjab with 29 wickets in just six matches. Markande’s glorious form continued as he was selected in the India A team against the England Lions. Markande’s fifer in the second innings for India A against the England Lions in the first unofficial test helped his team win by an innings and 68 runs. The prolific domestic career helped Markande knock the national selector’s doors, which resulted into the national call up for the T20 series against Australia.
With leg-break bowlers Amit Mishra and Sandeep Lamichhane already in the squad, addition of Mayank Markande has strengthened the leg-spin armoury. In the modern T20 cricket era, where leg spinners are playing a vital role in the game, Delhi Capitals will look to use Markande’s loopy leg breaks from the other end along with the experienced Mishra at the other.
