We secure a place in Playoffs as we defeat RCB at home!

THE SETTING

The stage was set for an exciting encounter as Kotla was jam-packed and painted blue by our fans. We had won 4 out of our previous 5 games before coming into this game.

There was only one change made from the playing XI in our previous game against the Royals - Lamichhane found his place in the team in place of Chris Morris.

Skipper Iyer decided to bat first seeing the dry pitch and the probability of the ball coming on nicely on to the bat.

THE POWERPLAY: ACT 1

Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan started smashing the ball right from the word go. Gabbar smashed Chahal for a six and a four in the 3rd over.

The young Shaw was looking in good nick. He had smacked 4 fours but had to return to the hut early as he was caught behind by Parthiv in the 4th over.

Skipper Iyer walked out to the middle and started building a pivotal partnership with Dhawan. The two put together a 50-run stand in just 37 balls.

Excellent execution from our batters ensured we get another powerful start in the powerplay. Our scoreboard read 59/1 at the end of 6 overs.

THE ESTABLISHMENT:

The duo kept finding the boundaries, but the rotation of the strike was also intelligent. They pushed themselves and scored plenty of ones and twos.

Meanwhile, Gabbar reached 4500 runs in the IPL, becoming only the 5th player to do so. Our southpaw also scored his 3rd consecutive fifty of IPL 2019.

THREE QUICK WICKETS:

In the 13th over, Dhawan was caught by Sundar at short fine when he tried to slog sweep Chahal's delivery but could only top-edge it.

Shreyas tried to up the ante as Chahal came on to bowl the 15th over. The 24-year-old displayed some fantastic footwork and got to his fifty in some style.

Sadly, Pant had to walk back after scoring just 7 runs as he got out LBW in the same over. Washington Sundar got our well-set skipper out in the 16th over.

Nevertheless, our boys were not flustered by the loss of these two wickets.

THE FLOURISH FROM RUTHERFORD:

Rutherford showed his brute force. He hit Stoinis for a massive six over midwicket in the 8th over. The 20-year-old then smoked Umesh Yadav for a 4 and a maximum in the penultimate over.

Sherfane played an excellent cameo of 28 runs off 13 deliveries. Axar Patel also supported Rutherford well and played a good hand of 16 runs off 9 deliveries to ensure we end with a flourish.

Our boys scored 56 runs in the last 4 overs and helped us get to a handsome total of 187/5 in 20 overs. This was also the highest total at #QilaKotla this season.

THE POWERPLAY: ACT 2

Parthiv Patel went on the offensive from Ball 1. The visitors were cruising and the scorecard read 45/0 at the end of 4 overs. Taking a wicket had become crucial to put a break on the free flow of runs.

Our golden boy Rabada finally got us the breakthrough in the 6th over. Parthiv cracked a cut shot and Axar Patel took a brilliant low catch at backward point.

THE CLIMAX:

The focus was now on the dynamic duo of skipper Kohli and AB de Villiers. Amit Mishra bowled a tight 7th over and gave just away just 3 runs. Iyer sent Axar Patel into the attack in the 8th over.

Our all-rounder got us the big fish. Kohli was caught in the deep by Sherfane Rutherford. Shivam Dube joined ABD at the centre. Halfway through the innings, RCB were 90 for 2.

THE TUMBLE:

Dube and ABD were going strong, but we were not having it for long.

Rutherford got the wicket of the big man ABD in the 12th over. Axar Patel took a stunner at deep midwicket. He was tiptoeing close to the boundary line but he maintained his balance and ensured he stayed in after completing the catch.

Amit Mishra came in to bowl the 13th over and further piled the pressure on the opposition by clinching two wickets. Klaasen attempted to scoop it over the keeper. He top edged the ball onto his helmet and it popped up on the leg side. Fantastic Pant raced towards the ball and completed the catch with a magnificent full-length dive.

Mishra bowled over Dube in the same over. The RCB all-rounder mistimed a shot and Dhawan completed a good catch running backwards.

THE NERVY LAST FIVE:

The two new batsmen in were Gurkeerat Singh and Marcus Stoinis. The opposition required 62 runs in the last 5 overs. However, we could not settle just yet.

A couple of expensive overs brought the situation to RCB requiring 36 from the last 3 overs.

Rabada's 18th over was crucial. And the Johannesburg-born player delivered yet again. He bowled some magnificent yorkers and conceded just 6 runs to put the pressure back on RCB.

Ishant was entrusted to bowl the penultimate over. It was all about nerves now. He made his experience count. After conceding just 2 runs in the first 3 balls, he got the wicket of Gurkeerat Singh on the 4th ball.

Rishabh Pant took a fantastic catch diving to his right. This was Ishant's 100th T20 wicket and the veteran speedster could not have taken it at a better time. He took a wicket and gave away just 4 runs in this important over.

RCB required 26 off the last over. Kagiso nabbed his 2nd wicket in the form of Washington Sundar and eventually, we sealed the deal to win the match comfortably by 16 runs.

Another team effort ensured another triumph and now we march into the playoffs! This is the first time since 2012 that we made it to the Top 4. We also moved back to the pole position of the IPL table. The journey so far has been a rollercoaster ride filled with comebacks, resilience and belief..A  belief that this season has the sparkle the eyes of Delhi have long awaited for to shine with. The DC boys will now look to continue our winning run going into the playoffs
