Despite our best effort, we ended our inaugural TATA WPL campaign as the runners-up after a 7-wicket defeat to Mumbai Indians in the Final. Down till the last over, we gave it our all at the Brabourne Stadium - CCI, however, the result favoured Harmanpreet Kaur and Co.
The final match was nothing short of a thriller by two of the most consistent teams in TATA WPL. Completing the league stage at the first spot, we ensured that our fans enjoyed some cherished memories from our campaign.
On the other hand, Mumbai Indians got the better of UP Warriorz in the Eliminator to qualify for the Final. They continued their stellar form to steal the show at the stage that mattered the most.
Skipper Meg Lanning won the toss and chose to bat first in this historic matchup.
We had just one change from our last match, bringing in Minnu Mani instead of Poonam Yadav.
Challenging Powerplay:
Our openers Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma had a quiet first over, contrasting from their explosiveness displayed in the season so far. However, Mumbai’s hat-trick star from the Eliminator, Issy Wong, dismissed Shafali Verma on a full toss.
The English pacer claimed her second of the over by accounting for Alice Capsey.
Maintaining her trademark calm in a tense situation, Captain Meg Lanning continued to attack, smashing back-to-back boundaries off Nat Sciver-Brunt.
Jemimah Rodrigues looked ominous at the start of her innings, hitting two boundaries. Unfortunately, she had to depart leaving Marizanne Kapp and Meg Lanning to do the rebuilding. We ended our powerplay at 38/3.
Holding Hopes:
Meg Lanning accelerated our innings after a sedate start by playing a Captain's knock. She was ably assisted by Kapp, who kept the scoreboard ticking.
With twin strikes in two overs, we lost both, Kapp and Lanning to halt our progress. Wickets continued to topple for us as we were left struggling with four dismissals for five runs. On the other hand, Purple Cap Holder Hayley Matthews completed a double-wicket maiden.
Shikha Pandey came to our rescue with a quickfire 27* off 17 balls, powering us beyond the three-figure mark.
At the other end, Radha Yadav unleashed her attacking prowess in a crucial situation, with an unbeaten 27 runs off 12 balls.
The last two balls turned around the match as Yadav hit them for monstrous sixes. A quick 52-run partnership off just 24 balls came up for the 10th wicket.
Owing to the late power-hitting, we set a target of 132 in our attempt to clinch the maiden TATA WPL Title.

MI openers Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia were off to a fine start, only momentarily. In the second over, Radha Yadav’s full toss hunted down Bhatia, with Alice Capsey completing the catch at mid-wicket.
Jess Jonassen got us the big breakthrough of Hayley Matthews, courtesy of a low catch by Arundhati Reddy. Owing to these early wickets, Mumbai Indians ended their powerplay at 27/2.

However, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr kept MI in the game with their electrifying boundaries. They needed just five runs in the last over. A boundary on the third ball sealed the victory for Mumbai Indians as they won the inaugural TATA WPL campaign.
A Season Of Learnings:
We end this campaign as runners-up, but we are forever grateful for all the love and support that we have received from our fans this season.
We walk away with several positives that are sure to set a strong foundation for the upcoming seasons. Our Skipper Meg Lanning emerged as the first-ever Orange Cap Holder in TATA WPL amassing 345 runs. Additionally, she holds the record for hitting fifty 4s, the most by any batter this season.
Shafali Verma has also played some memorable innings. With 13 maximums, she shares the record for the most 6s in this season, with RCB’s Sophie Devine.
Marizanne Kapp has bowled two maidens and 121 dot balls this inaugural season. Additionally, she also has the best bowling figures of the season, 5/15, which came up against the Gujarat Giants.
