Delhi Capitals Call for MIghty Fortune Change

Where do we start from? There are so many question mark thought bubbles floating that require answers. After winning 7 of our 9 games, we were favourites to capture one of the spots in Qualifier 1. Fast forward to today, we are still on 14 points after three tough back-to-back losses. Such is the IPL. Such is sport. However, there is a silver lining. Our destiny is well and truly in our hands.

The three losses in a row have only snowballed DC’s woes. Our batting succumbed to pressure against KKR while our bowlers had no answers to the SRH onslaught. But, the three-day break would have rejuvenated the squad and Punter would have ensured that he speaks to the players about individual areas of improvement. We enter the tunnel now having to face MI and RCB in the space of 3 days, and the whole of Delhi will pray that there is light at the end of it.

The defending champions, Mumbai Indians became the first team to qualify for the playoffs last night. A win against them will put a ‘Q’ against our name on the table as well and give us a much-needed morale boost. MI travel to Dubai having failed to win a game at the venue in this Dream11 IPL, losing both their encounters in Super Overs and double Super Overs. DC will hope that record remains intact. It won’t be easy-going against a Mumbai side that has hit the right notes more often than not, but Shreyas Iyer and his boys will believe they can overcome this lean patch and once again make a strong statement.

Last Time Out

Mumbai beat Delhi in the first fixture of this edition. Dhawan’s unbeaten knock and a partnership with the skipper was not enough as quick-fire fifties from Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav ensured MI got over the line.

Stat Attack

Ashwin will walk into his 150th IPL game when he takes the field against Mumbai, a milestone to be proud of. Shikhar Dhawan is 86 runs away from surpassing Suresh Raina as the top run-getter against MI in the history of the tournament. The southpaw was in top form having scored back-to-back tons, but had a couple of low scores since then. It won’t deter him though, and he’ll look to get back to his best in this crunch game.

Rishabh Pant hasn’t quite gotten going in this year’s edition. He’s only 11 runs away from 2000 IPL runs, and he’ll hope to rack those up and many more against the same opposition he played a blinder against in our season opener last year - a match-winning 78* off 27 deliveries.

DC vs MI is one of the most balanced rivalries in the league with Mumbai just edging ahead on the previous occasion these two sides met. Our boys will look to even things up at 13-all in their 13th match of the season today.

Key Battles

Ashwin vs de Kock

The South African keeper-batsman is the top-run getter for MI this season. The southpaw scored a breezy fifty last time around and Ashwin who has a good average against left-handed batsmen will look to outsmart him early in the Powerplay.

Bumrah vs Pant

Jasprit Bumrah has got Rishabh’s wicket 4 times in the IPL, the most by any bowler. Pant is due for a big knock this season and he will have to find a way to tackle one of the world’s best death bowlers to deliver.

Can DC answer the naysayers and reach the magical number of 16 points or will MI make things worse for Ricky Ponting and Shreyas’ team? It’s Super Saturday on Halloween at the Dubai International Stadium, 3:30 PM IST. Trick or treat?
