A complete batting display by Super Kings led by Conway’s 87 helped them put up a mammoth total of 208/6. After some early trouble, Marsh and Pant attacked for a brief period before the chase went downhill and the Capitals suffered a 91-run defeat.
A Conway Special at the DY Patil
After a dominating performance against Sunrisers, the DC Tigers took on the Super Kings for the one off battle at the DY Patil Stadium with some momentum on their side. Winning the toss against his mentor, Captain Pant decided to field first. There were two changes for us as Bapu came back into the XI and KS Bharat made his debut in the DC blue.
Shardul and Khaleel were right on the money in the first two overs not allowing the CSK opening duo to free their hands, but it was just the calm before the storm as Gaikwad walked down the track to Nortje and took him on down the ground. Conway fired from the other end, depositing Axar Patel for two maximums in the over as the Super Kings raced to 57 in the powerplay.
Conway was on song and attacked DC’s in-form bowler Kuldeep Yadav too, collecting 18 runs from the 8th over. DY Patil witnessed a 110-run opening partnership as Devon Conway went on to bring up his 3rd half century in a row and Ruturaj Gaikwad lent a supporting hand.
Come the 11th over, Anas provided the vital breakthrough as Gaikwad mistimed a fiery short ball hitting over 152 clicks, straight in the safe hands of Bapu at mid-wicket.
Dube joined Conway in the middle and brought up a fifty run stand in the next 5 overs with Conway continuing to attack Kuldeep and Dube launching into Thakur. Khaleel, DC’s best bowler on the night, finally managed to get rid of Conway for 87 and Dube fell soon after too.
MS Dhoni walked out with intent and connected a couple of lusty blows, but Nortje closed out the innings strongly with a double-wicket 9-run over at the end.
The Chase Falls Apart
Chasing a mighty 208 runs, David Warner found a fierce maximum at the end of the first over. At the other end, DC debutant Bharat started on the front foot and was off with two back-to-back boundaries. However, this joy was short lived as Bharat lost his wicket to a mistimed pull in that very over.
The Bison Mitch Marsh timed one sweetly through cover for starters. Warner found a couple more boundaries before being adjudged LBW to a close call off Theekshana’s bowling.
Despite being two down early, Pant announced his arrival at the crease with an array of shots, some clean and some extremely unorthodox as he scored a hat-trick of boundaries.
With Marsh and Pant collecting a flurry of boundaries and a maximum in the next two overs to get to 71/2 at the end of 7 overs, the chase looked on.
However, Moeen Ali came into the attack and got the better of Mitch Marsh to start a collapse as we lost our third. In his next over, we lost Captain Pant and Ripal Patel in quick succession putting us on the backfoot.
With two new batsmen on the crease, MS called Mukesh Choudhary into the attack who responded with the wicket off Axar with a jaffa to hit the bails, before going on to dismiss the form-man Rovman Powell. This was CSK’s second double-wicket over in back-to-back overs, a telling stat in a derailed chase.
