Capitals Face Sunrisers’ Threat on the Path to Maiden IPL Final

“We train together, we play together, we win together, we lose together. That's what we do here. And that's the way that we're gonna turn it around in two days' time.”

The never-say-die attitude of our head coach Ricky Ponting was evident in the traditional post-match speech after the first Qualifier and it will have boosted every DC star’s morale for the next big clash against the Sunrisers on Sunday night. This will also help DC fans’ keep their hopes up for the match that will decide which team faces Mumbai in the final. Qualifier 2 will be yet another thrilling contest in all departments – Explosive batting, quality spin bowling and lethal pace.

Forget the past --> Strategize --> Execute

We faced two losses against SRH in the league stages, but the squad will not let that record worry them one bit. It’s a fresh game with a spot in the Dream11 IPL final at stake. The Capitals will look to bring out their A-game.

A comprehensive win over RCB in the final league match at Abu Dhabi, a venue that has haunted them in the past, will prove to be a morale booster when they step onto the same field to take on the Sunrisers in the all-important Qualifier 2. The Warner-led SRH team will be confident outfit too, having won four games in row coming into this fixture, all four of them against the other three teams in the Playoffs.

Delhi Capitals versus Sunrisers Hyderabad will also be a game of match-ups as both the teams have their departments well sorted, especially the bowling units.

While the Ash-Axar combo has been responsible for a lot of breakthroughs amongst tight overs, Rashid Khan has almost single-handedly done the job for the Sunrisers in the spin department. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje bring more to the table in terms of intimidating pace and wicket-taking abilities, but T Natarajan and Jason Holder have proven that they make up for the lack of express pace with enviable skillsets in terms of accuracy with yorkers. The SRH fast-bowling duo take the top-two spots of the bowlers with most yorkers this season.

The Delhi Capitals batting order has faced a few troubles in recent games, but there are absolutely no questions in terms of potential to deliver. Shikhar Dhawan has already played some breathtaking innings, and he’ll have to fire on the big night. Marcus Stoinis has held the middle order together with three half-centuries already in this year’s edition, all in crunch situations. Shreyas Iyer had a magnificent first half, and it’s just the ideal situation for another captain’s knock tonight.

The Sunrisers top-order led by David Warner has fired on all cylinders in the recent past, while Kane Williamson has shepherded the middle order with dexterity. The Capitals will have to get past these experienced stalwarts to get into a rather inexperienced middle order.

Shreyas Iyer is just 61 runs short of becoming the top run-scorer for the Delhi franchise. Virender Sehwag currently holds the record with 2174 runs. Rishabh Pant find himself 40 runs away from 3000 T20 runs while Ajinkya Rahane is 69 runs short of the 4000-run mark in the IPL. Jinks is also 4 sixes away from taking his T20 career tally to 100.

The fastest bowler of the Dream11 IPL, Anrich Nortje has also done well with the wickets and is 3 wickets away from 50 T20 wickets. All-rounder Harshal Patel needs two wickets to reach a century of T20 wickets.

Ravichandran Ashwin has been at his deceptive best, and he requires two wickets to become only the third Indian bowler to take 250 T20 wickets.

Key Battles

Shreyas Iyer vs Rashid Khan

Shreyas Iyer, who has always played his role of strengthening the middle order for DC, will face a tough challenge from the Afghan spinner Rashid Khan. Shreyas is a good player of spin bowling and will look of negate the threat of Rashid Khan to put his team in a good position.

David Warner vs R Ashwin

Ashwin has been exceptional against the left-handed batsmen throughout the IPL. He has been a wicket-taking force in the powerplay too. R Ashwin has gotten the better of Warner three times in the IPL so far and will want to add to that number when he takes him on tonight.

DC – L, W, L, L, L,

While SRH has had a series of wins towards the end of the tournament, DC had a great start with some slip ups in the latter half.

But come tonight, none of that is going to matter. The IPL Playoffs are a stage where the best laid plans can be foiled by the best of players. DC fans will hope that it’s one of theirs who takes the game by the scruff of the neck and steps up on the big stage.
