DC vs KKR | Delhi Capitals go down to table toppers Kolkata Knight Riders

The Delhi Capitals suffered a heavy defeat by 106 runs against an in-form Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Wednesday in their second home game at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

The Knight Riders captain, Shreyas Iyer, won the toss and elected to bat on a batting-friendly pitch. There was only one change for us. Sumit Kumar replaced the injured Mukesh Kumar.

Kolkata Knight Riders were off to a flying start, courtesy of Phil Salt and Sunil Narine. The opening pair notched 50+ runs inside four overs.

Our ace pacer, Anrich Nortje, came into the attack in the fifth over. The dangerous-looking Salt was dismissed for 18 by the Protea pacer.

However, it didn’t stop Narine as he continued his flamboyant knock and brought his first fifty of IPL 2024 in 21 balls. At the end of the powerplay, the Knight Riders were 88/1.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who joined Narine, ensured the quickfire scoring continued. The visitors were 135/1 at the halfway stage of the innings.

Mitchell Marsh, then, returned for his second spell to bowl the 13th over and got rid of the well-set Narine for 85.

The KKR debutant Raghuvanshi, soon after scoring his fifty, fell to Nortje while trying to up the ante. Even after losing two wickets in just five balls, KKR continued to bat aggressively.

Shreyas Iyer and Andre Russell scored freely, continuing their ominous form heading into the death overs. Shreyas, however, fell prey to Khaleel Ahmed in the 18th over.

Nortje dismissed Rinku Singh after his blistering cameo in the penultimate over. Meanwhile, Ishant Sharma nailed a yorker to perfection to claim the big wicket of Andre Russell and then claimed the wicket of Ramandeep Singh, too, in the final over.

The Knight Riders scored 272/7 in their 20 overs and registered their highest team total in IPL.

David Warner and Prithvi Shaw came into bat with positive intent and it reflected in the first over against Mitchell Starc. Shaw looked to take on Vaibhav Arora, too, in the second over but his innings was cut short at 10.

Marsh’s crisp square cut, then, went straight into the hands of Ramandeep Singh at backward point. Even Abishek Porel failed to make the most of his opportunity with the bat.

Warner, meanwhile, was looking in good touch. But an unfortunate inside edge ended his stay at the crease for 18. We were reduced to 51/4 at the end of the powerplay.

Skipper Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs spent some time in the middle and played every ball on its merit, stitching a strong partnership.

After getting their eye in, the duo got a move on, and our skipper tried his best to keep the required rate in check.

Pant added good value to the total with a 28-run over off Venkatesh Iyer and scored another solid fifty.

However, the swashbuckling batter was dismissed in the next over by Varun Chakaravarthy, who also got rid of Axar Patel on back-to-back deliveries.

Stubbs, later, got out to Chakaravarthy but not before a well-deserved fifty.

We, then, failed to control the fall of wickets and were bowled out for 166 in 17.2 overs by the Knight Riders to hand us the third defeat of our campaign.

Brief Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 272/7 in 20 overs with Sunil Narine 85(39), Angkrish Raghuvanshi 54(27), Anrich Nortje 3/59; beat Delhi Capitals 166/10 in 17.2 overs with Rishabh Pant 55(25); Tristan Stubbs 54(32), Vaibhav Arora 3/27; by 106 runs.

Player of the Match: Sunil Narine.
