DC vs SRH | Delhi Capitals' winning streak ends as Sunrisers Hyderabad win by 67 runs

Delhi Capitals lost their first game of IPL 2024 at home, as the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated us by 67 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday. SRH brought an end to our two match winning streak.

Skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first. We saw some changes in the Playing XI as Sumit Kumar replaced Lalit Yadav. Unfortunately, Ishant Sharma had a back issue just before the toss and had to be replaced by Anrich Nortje.

SRH were off to an electric start as both their openers, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, went after every delivery and added 50+ runs in 2.4 overs. Head brought up his fifty in 16 balls.

They made the most of the Powerplay and ended up scoring 125 runs in six overs.

Our premier spinner, Kuldeep Yadav broke the opening partnership in the seventh over when Axar Patel took a sharp catch of Abhishek Sharma for 46. Aiden Markram also walked back to the pavilion in the same over.

Head continued to bat with the same intent and added quick runs for his side. However, his innings was brought to an end in the ninth over as Kuldeep added a third wicket to his tally.

Axar Patel joined Kuldeep and dismissed Heinrich Klaasen at the halfway stage of the innings.

Both spinners helped us to make a comeback to some extent as SRH lost four wickets in the span of four overs and managed to add 33 runs on the board.

Our bowlers bowled some tight overs with two new batters at the crease. Nitish Reddy and Shahbaz Ahmed were treating each ball on its merit and managed to keep the scoreboard ticking.

The duo steadied the SRH ship and added a 50-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Kuldeep was brought back in the 17th over to get a breakthrough and he delivered yet again. The chinaman took four wickets in his quota of four overs.

Shahbaz Ahmed and Abdul Samad used the long handle in the final overs of the innings. Mukesh bagged his first wicket in the last over of the innings in the form of Samad. Shahbaz held his head high and scored his maiden IPL fifty to take his side to 266/7 in 20 overs.

Prithvi Shaw replaced Khaleel Ahmed as an Impact Sub and walked in to open the innings with David Warner.

He showed aggressive intent after hitting four consecutive boundaries against Washington Sundar but Sundar had his man on the fifth delivery of the first over.

Shaw’s opening partner David Warner followed him to the pavilion the next over after being dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the next over.

The explosive hitter, Jake Fraser-McGurk (JFM) was up and running as he hammered 30 runs courtesy of three fours and three sixes in the third over against Sundar.

He was accompanied by Abishek Porel from the other end. The fascinating pair kept going from strength to strength and brought a 50-run partnership off just 17 balls.

We were 88/2 at the end of the Powerplay overs. The two batters kept the required run rate in check.

JFM was spot on right from the word go and was firing on all cylinders. He scripted history by not just scoring the fastest fifty for us in the IPL in just 15 deliveries but it was also the fastest fifty of IPL 2024.

Fans came in large numbers to cheer for us in our first home game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Mayank Markande was introduced in the seventh over and he brought an end to JFM’s swashbuckling knock for 65.

Abishek Porel took up the aggressor’s role after the loss of our third wicket and was looking in fabulous touch.

Mayank got rid of the southpaw before he could bring up his fifty. Porel amassed 42 off 22 in his impressive cameo.

Nitish Reddy came to bowl the 13th over of the innings and claimed the big wicket of Tristan Stubbs for 10.

Pant who was looking strong kept losing partners at the other end. Lalit Yadav departed early as Natarajan claimed his first wicket of the match in the 15th over.

Natarajan picked the wickets of Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje and Kuldeep Yadav in the penultimate over.

Skipper Pant was the final man to go as he fell prey to Reddy in the 20th over. Sunrisers Hyderabad brought an end to our winning streak as they defeated us by 67 runs.

Brief Scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 266/7 in 20 overs with Travis Head 89(32), Shahbaz Ahmed 59(29), Kuldeep Yadav 4/55; beat Delhi Capitals 199/10 in 19.1 overs with Jake Fraser-McGurk 65(18), Rishabh Pant 44(35), T Natarajan 4/19; by 67 runs.
