The Delhi Capitals put on a dominant display against the Mumbai Indians, cruising to a 6-wicket win at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. An emphatic bowling effort led by Mukesh Kumar was backed by a solid batting performance by the boys in red and blue to make it 2 out of 2 this season.
Axar Patel once again won the toss and chose to bowl. The decision proved fruitful as Mukesh Kumar put Delhi ahead, picking up the wickets of the in-form Ryan Rickleton and the dangerous Tilak Varma. By the end of the powerplay, DC’s tight bowling had restricted Mumbai to only 41 runs for the loss of 2 wickets.
Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav began to rebuild the innings, but Axar broke the partnership, picking up Rohit Sharma’s wicket for the 16th time in the IPL. Suryakumar Yadav continued to keep the run-rate going, until he was dismissed by one of Lungi Ngidi’s lethal slower balls. An exceptional bowling effort, combined with sharp fielding, helped contain MI’s powerful batting to a part total of 162.
Delhi had an early setback as they lost both KL Rahul and Nitish Rana in the first two overs. However, Pathum Nissanka in his first home game ensured that the innings never stagnated and kept the runs flowing. His quickfire 44 runs of 30 balls was invaluable in ensuring DC’s success.
But the man of the hour was Sameer Rizvi, whose heroics sealed the win for DC. He walked in at number 4 and soaked in the pressure at one end, allowing Nissanka to free himself. Following the Sri Lankan’s departure, he began to take the opposition bowling on, standing tall and guiding the team across the finish line.
Rizvi was awarded the Player of the Match award for the second game in a row for his outstanding 90 runs of 51 balls. The Delhi Capitals continued their perfect start to the season, showcasing a well-rounded performance that reinforced their strong start to the campaign.
The Capitals will now aim to continue their stellar start to the season at home on the 8th of April against the Gujarat Titans.
