Delhi Capitals: First-Ever TATA WPL Finalists

Delhi Capitals became the first team to qualify for the TATA WPL 2023 Final after a convincing five-wicket win over UP Warriorz.

Skipper Meg Lanning called it right at the toss and put UP Warriorz to bat first. Alice Capsey’s three-fer, along with Radha Yadav’s two-wicket haul helped us to restrict the Warriorz to 138/6.

Meanwhile, in the run chase, the Meg-Shifu duo racked up another half-century stand to give us a solid start. Capsey, supported by Marizanne Kapp, braved some middle-overs jitters to take DC steadily over the finishing line.

Curtailing the UP Batting Force:

For the second consecutive day, Delhi Capitals bowlers triumphed over the opposition in the powerplay. While wickets didn’t fall in a heap, the bowlers restricted the run flow early on, dismissing the free-scoring Alyssa Healy.

Radha Yadav grabbed the first wicket after deceiving Shweta Sehrawat in the fifth over.

Healy kept struggling to gain momentum after the initial exchanges. New batter Simran Shaikh, too, was unable to score at a respectable rate.

All of that pressure by Kapp, Jonassen and Radha reaped rewards for Capsey, who eventually got the better of Healy in a tantalising tenth over.

Tahlia Stands Tall For UPW:

The tide turned firmly in our favour after Healy’s dismissal. Capsey spun her web around the Warriorz middle-order, just when they looked to tee off.

After Radha got rid of Simran, Jonassen and Capsey not only controlled the runs but also picked a few wickets. Jess took her eighth wicket of the TATA WPL 2023 campaign, which accounted for the hard-hitting Kiran Navgire.

On the other hand, Capsey’s wizardry stumped Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone.

Our prolific wicketkeeper Taniyaa Bhatia completed four fantastic stumpings, the joint-most in a single T20 match!

However, Tahlia McGrath found her rhythm with the bat towards the death overs. She was the lone warrior with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 58 runs off only 32 balls. It enabled UPW to put up a fighting total on the scoreboard.

Meg-Shifu Continue Their Dream Form:

We had to chase the target within 19.4 overs to seal our spot in the TATA WPL Final. Keeping this in mind, our skipper Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma got off to a flyer.

Lanning spared no time, taking Shabnim Ismail for 20 runs in the very first over. Our Captain continued on her merry way in the powerplay, with her trademark combination of timing and placement to score quickly.

Unconventional to her playing style, Shafali had a watchful start. However, she took off after getting her eye in.

Within the first five overs, our openers stitched a 56-run stand. It was Soppadhandi Yashasri who got her maiden TATA WPL wicket which ended the Meg-Shifu blitz.

Kapp-Sey You In The TATA WPL Final:

Tensions were raised, after losing Shafali Verma, Meg Lanning, and Jemimah Rodrigues in quick succession. However, Capsey once again came up with the counter-punch.

Our 18-year-old English all-rounder started bravely against fellow countrywoman Sophie Ecclestone, smashing her for a hat-trick of fours in the ninth over. Capsey continued hitting crucial boundaries every other over to keep us in the ascendancy throughout the chase.

Alongside Marizanne Kapp, Capsey’s 31-ball 34 helped raise a 60-run stand for the fourth wicket, which almost guaranteed us a place in the final.

All this way, Delhi Capitals Head Coach Ricky Ponting, along with the rest of our squad, were backing us to win tonight.

Kapp continued the momentum with only a handful of runs to chase. Smashing Deepti Sharma through covers on the penultimate ball of the 18th over, Kapp ensured that we became the first team to reach the TATA WPL Final.

After this deserving five-wicket win, our girls also finished top of the TATA WPL 2023 points table.

In the TATA WPL 2023, our girls have stepped up to the plate and delivered in crunch moments, whenever necessary. The team’s spirit and ethos were once again on display in all three departments as we cruised our way into the Final on Sunday.

The biggest positive of the final league encounter is Alice Capsey’s all-round display. The youngster showcased her talents in a crucial encounter with a match-winning spell and a steady knock.

We will take on the winners of the Eliminator between Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz at the Brabourne Stadium on Sunday, March 26, at 7:30 PM IST. One step closer to bringing the cup home!

Brief scores: UP Warriorz 138/6 in 20 overs (Tahlia McGrath 58*; Alice Capsey 3/26, Radha Yadav 2/28) lost to Delhi Capitals 142/5 in 17.5 overs (Alice Capsey 34, Marizanne Kapp 34*; Shabnim Ismail 2/29) by five wickets.
