Delhi Capitals Seal an Emphatic Win over Gujarat Giants in TATA WPL

Looking to bounce back after a loss against Mumbai Indians, we faced Gujarat Giants in our fourth match of TATA WPL. Marizanne Kapp became the second DC player and the third overall to scalp a five-fer in the league.

Doing what she does best, Shafali Verma’s unbeaten 76* of 28 deliveries powered us to an emphatic 10-wicket win over the Giants.

High-five from Marizanne Kapp:

We took on Gujarat Giants intending to come back from our heartbreak against Mumbai Indians. Sneh Rana called it right at the toss for the opposition, choosing to bat first.

Australian power-hitter Laura Harris made her debut in DC colours, while South African star Laura Wolvaardt made it to the Giants’ Playing XI.

Marizanne Kapp gave us the best possible start by cleaning out Sabbhineni Meghana with her second delivery. She swiftly added to her wicket count by dismissing the dangerous Laura Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner with successive deliveries.

Shikha Pandey joined the attack by dismissing Dayalan Hemalatha, crumbling the Gujarat Giants' batting line-up further.

Marizanne Kapp rattled the opposition with her remarkable bowling, ending her spell with mindblowing figures of 5/15. We restricted the Gujarat Giants to 54/6 at the end of 10 overs.

Bowler’s Paradise:

Despite their best efforts, Gujarat Giants could not find their footing as our bowlers continued to display their fine form.

Radha Yadav cleaned up Georgia Wareham with a slower full-length delivery to ensure that the batting struggles continued for Gujarat Giants after the powerplay.

Soon, Shikha Pandey doubled her wicket count by taking out Tanuja Kanwar. Once again, we were left amazed by Jemimah Rodrigues’ fielding!

In the same over, Pandey took out the Giants’ captain Sneh Rana restricting them to 105/9 in 20 overs.

Shafali Aali in DY Patil:

After an extraordinary display by our bowlers, Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning started our run-chase in a determined manner. While our skipper maintained her trademark composure, Shafali displayed her explosiveness right from the start. The duo brought up the highest powerplay score in the TATA WPL so far.

Kim Garth, who looked her threatening best ahead of tonight’s encounter, was no match for in-form Shafali Verma. The Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup-winning captain smashed the Australian all-rounder for three back-to-back fours.

Rushing towards an entertaining 76 in just 28 balls and smashing 10 fours and 5 sixes along the way, Shafali made sure that we chased the total swiftly - within 7.1 overs!

The Road Ahead:

With 6 points from our 4 matches, we have our eyes set towards a Top-3 finish in the group stages and ultimately, go all the way. Half-way through the season, we have established ourselves as one of the most balanced teams in the tournament.

We now aim to build on this momentum and carry our form in the return fixtures as well!

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals: 107/0 (20) - Shafali Verma: 76* (28), Meg Lanning: 21* (15) defeated Gujarat Giants: 105/9 (20) - Kim Garth: 32* (37), Georgia Wareham: 22 (25), Marizanne Kapp: 5/15, Shikha Pandey: 3/26
