Delhi Capitals vs Gujarat Giants: Mission Playoffs On Our Minds!

We have barely got our collective breath back after that enthralling win against RCB. After a whirlwind chase, Jess Jonassen and Marizanne Kapp got us home in a last-over thriller. The win maintained our second spot in the TATA WPL 2023 Points Table with four wins in five matches.

Shikha Pandey was impressive with the ball at the DY Patil Sports Academy on Monday with her three-wicket haul. The seamer, who also grabbed a stunning catch to dismiss Heather Knight, is now the leading wicket-taker in our team. Her economy rate of 6.84 this season is commendable too.

On the other hand, the run chase of 151 did not begin in the best possible manner. However, Alice Capsey’s cameo of 38 from 24 balls gave our girls a platform to build on.

Jemimah Rodrigues, meanwhile, chipped in with another vital knock for DC to set up a nail-biting finish.

However, the finishing job fell onto Kappie and Jess, who did it rather brilliantly. The duo chased down 37 runs in the last five overs to seal another W for us in the TATA WPL.

While we chewed our nails off right until that winning hit, Jess and Jemimah got together to celebrate the win in a style we could not say Naa-tu.

Return to Brabourne Stadium:

To get a step closer towards the TATA WPL Playoffs, we take on GG at the Brabourne Stadium. It is only our second game at the venue this season after four on the bounce at the DY Patil Sports Academy.

While we have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Navi Mumbai, the echoes of that remarkable win against RCB at Brabourne in our first-ever match are still fresh in our minds. Also, with the DC Toli expected in full flow once again, we are raring to go on Thursday.

It gets even more special when familiar faces roar our girls on!

Only five days before the upcoming fixture, we beat GG by 10 wickets. Remember that blitzkrieg by Shafali? Hopefully, we see more of the same this time out as well.

What to expect:

Fly Kappie:

Marizanne Kapp played a crucial knock in the latest win against RCB. The run-a-ball 32 formed the backbone of a successful chase. It was her maximum in the 18th over which reignited the DC efforts.

Even Jemi seemed to enjoy that Kapp-tastic performance on Monday, especially THAT dive.

Kappie picked up a five-for in her previous encounter against GG. We can expect another cracking performance from our Protea all-rounder on Thursday.

Shikha Pandey’s Pace:

Shikha Pandey has been involved in all good things DC off late. The pacer not only scalped three wickets in the previous game, but her stunning catch capped off another incredible night.

Shikha tore apart the GG lower order last time out. Considering her form, we cannot wait for her to take the field again.

Jess another match-winning performance:

Jonassen, yet again, proved her all-round capabilities in the last match with an astonishing six that took us closer to the win!

She has been making a habit of finishing games with the bat in the TATA WPL. With a strike rate of 192.10, Jess has been a challenge for most bowlers this season. Meanwhile, she also has picked up three wickets.

The Aussie all-rounder remains a key player in the upcoming match.

Key battles

Marizanne Kapp vs Harleen Deol

Harleen Deol is GG’s top run-getter so far this season with 133 runs. While she scored a fifty against RCB earlier this season, the right-handed batter also registered cameos against DC, MI and UPW.

However, she has been dismissed against pace in three of the five matches so far, including once against our Kappie. Marizanne has troubled the top order with the new ball. The windy conditions at Brabourne are expected to suit Kapp in this head-to-head battle.

DC openers vs Kim Garth

Shafali Verma and skipper Meg Lanning have batted like a dream this season. The duo have registered two hundred-plus partnerships while scoring at an exceptional rate.

After her match-winning five-for against UP Warriorz, Garth has scalped just one wicket in three games.

The Meg-Shafali combination will have to set early precedence on Garth’s new ball spell to deliver us a good start. With the success our Indo-Aus duo have had this season, this could be a great contest to watch against the talents of Garth.

Shikha Pandey vs Sophia Dunkley

Shikha Pandey has been influential with the ball, especially in the last couple of games. She has backed up Kapp at the start and has regularly picked wickets in the middle overs.

Meanwhile, Sophia Dunkley’s aggressive style has been worth a watch so far. Her exceptional ability to find gaps and tonk the ball long distances will send out a caution to our bowlers. Dunkley holds the record for the quickest WPL fifty (18 balls).

Shikha Pandey, with her economical bowling, could be DC’s weapon to unleash against Dunkley at Brabourne. It promises to be an exciting faceoff!
