IPL 2020 Auction: Finding Capitals’ Next Stars in the City of Joy

The long wait finally comes to an end today as a total 332 cricketers are set to go under the hammer in Kolkata at the IPL 2020 Player Auction.

This will be a mini auction considering the standard three-year cyclical IPL timeline. So, teams will strategize accordingly, trying to find the missing pieces in their squads in order to challenge for the title.

Auction Pool

Seven overseas players command the highest base price of INR 2 crore this auction – Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Chris Lynn, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Dale Steyn and Angelo Mathews.

Other notable overseas talents include the likes of Jason Roy (1.5 Cr), Eoin Morgan (1.5 Cr), Chris Morris (1.5 Cr), Adam Zampa (1.5 Cr), Evin Lewis (1 Cr), Marcus Stoinis (1 Cr), Tom Banton (1 Cr), Shimron Hetmyer (50 L), James Neesham (50 L).

Coming to the Indian talent, Robin Uthappa is the sole player in the INR 1.5 crore bracket whereas Piyush Chawla, Yusuf Pathan & Jaydev Unadkat make the list of players whose base price is set at INR 1 crore.

Keeping a Strong Core

Delhi Capitals was one of the strongest teams to emerge from the auction before IPL 2019, and it was proved on the field as the Shreyas Iyer-led side finished level on points with the toppers in the league stage and went on to reach the qualifiers.

Speaking about the upcoming auction, our CEO Dhiraj Malhotra stated that one of the key goals of the franchise was to build the team around a strong foundation.

"The plan is to keep the core same as we have quite a few young guns in Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and now we have R. Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan. We were the youngest team in the competition last year and we would like to continue and grow just like say a CSK does or a MI does really well," he said in an interview.

Skipper Shreyas has slowly cemented his spot in the national team’s playing XI, Rishabh Pant has been assigned the first-choice keeper in the limited over formats and Prithvi Shaw has made a fabulous start to his international career.

The presence of experienced personnel Shikhar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra compliments the youth, providing the team with the right mixture to compete on the big stage.

Now with the addition of Ashwin & Rahane in the side the team has further strengthened its Indian core.

“These two are team players and bring a lot of value to the franchise with their experience,” Dhiraj commented while speaking about the incoming duo. “Having spoken to both, I know they want to contribute. They are raring to go. Even though you speak about experience when you take those names, I see exuberance and the spark. Can't wait for them to come in and guide us with their wealth of knowledge."

Auction Day Plans

Having retained a bunch of its core, the team has 11 available slots in the upcoming auction - 5 of them for overseas players. The total purse the team has on the day is 27.85 Cr.

Unfortunately, head coach Ricky Ponting will not be present at the table in Kolkata due to prior commitments. But the former Australian skipper did have a meeting with the management to discuss the strategy for auction day.

Speaking about the upcoming auction, CEO Dhiraj Malhotra stated that the plans have been set for the day and is looking forward to carrying forward the work done last season.

“You know in the auction it also depends on what the other franchises do. We have already made the strategies and the amount we will spend on which player. It will be a collective decision-making process.”

The auction is set to start at 3:30 PM IST. You can catch all the updates on our Delhi Capitals auction centre here: https://www.delhicapitals.in/ipl-auction
