Ricky Ponting has joined the meeting over a zoom call on the projector. They get into their strategies for the final time, T-minus 4 fours from the IPL Auction 2021 where they’ve got to bat for DC and put a good squad on the board.
We all know that the IPL Auction is a place where your best-laid plans could go out of the window in the space of a bid. The proceedings begin, and a couple of big names go unsold. A bail with the name of a certain Steven Smith is brought out, and RCB bids at base price. We’re in it as well, with our first bid of ₹ 2.2 crores. To everyones’ surprise, we have one of the world’s top batsmen in our ranks with our very first bid! The ones batting for DC at the auction table were off to a spectacular start in the powerplay.

The middle overs started off a little rocky, with a couple of plays and misses and some good leaves. We missed out on acquiring the services of Shivam Dube and Nathan Coulter-Nile, who were eventually sold to RR and MI respectively one bid after we backed out. On the other hand, Jhye Richardson eventually went to the team with the biggest purse, Punjab Kings, at a whopping ₹ 14 crore, almost double the price at which we shouldered arms to the fast bowler.

It was smooth sailing once more in the middle overs for the DC batsmen, with the next five buys coming at base price. The biggest name among the lot was Indian international Umesh Yadav, whose services we bagged at a steal of ₹ 1 crore.
With the exception of a couple of mistimed shots for Shahrukh Khan and Riley Meredith, the DC management hit the sweet spot every time, roping in Ripal Patel, Vishnu Vinod, Lukman Meriwala, and Manimaran Siddharth at ₹ 20 lac each to complete a talented pool of uncapped domestic talent.

The death overs came and the auctions accelerated the pace. Owing to some clever plays before the slog overs came in, we’d still got ₹ 9.4 crores worth of money in hand with two overseas spots to fill. And it’s that very factor that enabled our management to go hard for Tom Curran, eventually putting in a successful bid for the English bowling all-rounder at ₹ 5.25 crores.
The final blow came when we managed to get the talented Sam Billings back to Delhi - where his IPL journey began - for another steal at his base price of ₹ 2 crores.
