LSG vs DC | Delhi Capitals seal their second win of IPL 2024 in Lucknow

Delhi Capitals registered an emphatic win against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday. This was our second win in IPL 2024 and also our first victory against the neighbours in IPL history.

The home captain, KL Rahul, won the toss and decided to bat first. Mukesh Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav returned to the Delhi Capitals lineup after injury.

The young Aussie batter, Jake Fraser-McGurk made his IPL debut and became the latest addition to play for us in the league.

The Super Giants’ openers came in to bat with an aggressive mindset, but our in-form pacer, Khaleel Ahmed, had other plans. The left-arm bowler trapped Quinton de Kock in his second over for 19.

Khaleel didn’t stop here and kept pushing the batters on the backfoot with his express pace. Later, he also got Devdutt Padikkal’s wicket in the fifth over.

Our left-arm pacer could’ve added the third wicket to his tally on the next ball but Khaleel couldn't manage to hold on to Marcus Stoinis’ catch on his follow-through.

Kuldeep, who was making his comeback into the side, made a mark with back-to-back wickets of Stoinis and Pooran in his first over. KL Rahul, however, kept maintaining a healthy run rate even after losing partners on the other end.

Kuldeep, then, in his second over, bagged the wicket of the well-set KL Rahul for 39. A smart review behind the stumps from our skipper, Rishabh Pant helped Kuldeep to claim his third scalp. At the end of the halfway stage, LSG scored 80 runs with half of the side back in the pavilion.

Ishant Sharma returned for his second spell in the 12th over and dismissed Deepak Hooda for 10 as our bowlers kept strengthening our grip on the game.

Mukesh Kumar, too, joined the party as he picked up his first wicket in the next over after dismissing Krunal Pandya early.

LSG batter Ayush Badoni held his head high along with Arshad Khan and made sure that the home side didn’t lose any more wickets from here.

After completing his quota of four overs, Khaleel Ahmed was replaced by Abishek Porel.

Badoni brought up his first fifty of the season in the penultimate over.

Hard-hitting Arshad and Badoni scored freely in the death overs and took LSG to 167/7 in their 20 overs.

Our openers got us off to a cautious start. Yash Thakur was introduced into the attack in the fourth over and struck the first blow, dismissing David Warner in the early exchanges.

Prithvi Shaw, on the other hand, played some fabulous shots and showed positive intent at the crease.

Jake Fraser-McGurk, also known as JFM, who was making his IPL debut, announced his arrival in style by clearing the fence against Yash Thakur and then he took on Arshad Khan in the fifth over.

The two explosive batters, Prithvi and Jake were looking in good touch as we posted 62/1 in the powerplay. However, Shaw’s knock was cut short by Ravi Bishnoi in the seventh over.

Rishabh Pant, then, came into bat and soon created history by becoming the first batter to complete 3000 runs for Delhi Capitals.

The two batters took on the LSG bowlers, especially JFM, who never made it look as if he was making his IPL debut. He hit three consecutive sixes against Krunal Pandya, tilting the match in our favour. The duo completed the 50-run partnership in the 13th over to take the score to 121/2.

JFM brought up his maiden half-century on debut in 31 balls. But soon after completing his fifty, the Aussie batter was dismissed in the next over for 55.

The game was well in our control when we lost our fourth wicket in the 16th over as Pant fell prey to Bishnoi for 41.

Tristan Stubbs and Shai Hope made sure that there was no further damage done and with three runs required in the last two overs, Stubbs deposited it into the stands to take us over the line with 11 balls to spare.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 170/4 in 18.1 overs with Jake Fraser-McGurk 55(35), Rishabh Pant 41 (24), Ravi Bishnoi 2/25; beat Lucknow Super Giants 167/7 in 20 overs with Ayush Badoni 55*(35), KL Rahul 39 (22), Kuldeep Yadav 3/20; by 6 wickets.

Player of the Match: Kuldeep Yadav.
