Match Report - DC vs UPW | WPL 2024

On the occasion of Women’s Day, our DC tigresses clashed with UP Warriorz at our home game of Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The evening started on a positive note as we collaborated with UP Warriorz for a special campaign called #SheBelievesWeBelieve.

Having been sent into bowl, our girls started off well with Titas knocking the stumps of Kiran Navgire with the ball that pitched slightly full, and then swung back in. Deepti Sharma walked in next at no. 3 and started to build a partnership with Alyssa Healy. Their stand was quite steady even though the run rate stayed in control.

However, half through the innings, the tide started turning a bit. Alice Capsey picked up the wicket of Healy in the 9th over while Arundhati Reddy got the wicket of Tahlia McGrath in the next over only to put the opposition on the backfoot.

Deepti, on the other hand, kept the team’s scoreboard moving with boundaries coming from her bat. But, she hardly had any support having lost her partner four times in four overs from the 14th over onwards. Deepti reached her fifty in the last over of the innings with helping UP Warriorz finish on 138 for 8.

While Titas and Radha Yadav picked up a brace while Shikha, Arundhati, Jonassen and Capsey also chipped in with a wicket each.

Chasing the total of 139, our opening stand of Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning didn’t get us off to a perfect start with the former getting out for 15 off 12 balls. Meg, on the other hand, made sure she kept one end held up starting to form a stand with Capsey.

In the fifth over, the Aussie star scored three fours in a row to break the shackles. But Capsey struggled a bit and eventually was dismissed for 15 off 23 balls. When she was dismissed in the 11th over, the score was at 69 for 2.

Her wicket didn’t stop Meg who managed to score three fours on the trot which also took her to her third consecutive fifty in the tournament. But Deepti got the better of her for 60 runs from 46 balls. Her knock had put us in a good position but a lot of drama was yet to unfold.

Jemimah Rodrigues scored 17 off 15 balls while Sutherland chipped in with only six runs. When Jemimah was dismissed, our side needed only 27 runs from 17 balls. Jonassen lowered some pressure hitting a four and a six in that over to bring down the equation to 15 runs off the last two overs.

In the 19th over, Deepti dismissed Sutherland and Arundhati off the first two balls. Shikha walked in and smashed her first ball for a four and was dismissed on the next ball. With three wickets in that over, the equation entering the last over was 10 runs required.

Grace Harris was given to bowl the last over. Radha smashed the first ball for a six and then took two more runs to bring down the equation to just two runs. However,  she unfortunately got out trying to go for another big one.

The next ball saw a run out of Jonassen, as she tried to quickly turn over the strike and finish the innings. Titas, batting at no.11, could only manage to hold out on mid-on, which resulted in us falling short of the UPW’s total by only a run.

Our next challenge will be up against Royal Challengers Bangalore whom we have already beaten thrice so far in WPL history. We will be up for an exciting challenge on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
