Match Report: A blip at Chepauk halts our unbeaten away run

THE SETTING

Both, us and CSK were vying a confirmed spot in the Top 2 on the IPL table. With a playoff spot confirmed for us, Rabada and Ishant were rested for our match against CSK while Boult and Suchith found a place in the playing XI. Time has really flown by and this was already the 50th match of this season.

Skipper Iyer chose to bowl first after winning the toss at Chepauk.

THE POWERPLAY: ACT 1

Boult and Suchith gave us a tremendous start. Our speedster conceded just 2 singles in his initial 2 overs. Our young left-arm spinner also conceded just 1 run in his first over.

Suchith got us the first breakthrough in the 4th over. Watson was caught at deep midwicket by Axar Patel and at the end of 4 overs, CSK's scoreboard read 7/1.

Suresh Raina came out to the middle to join Faf du Plessis and steadied the ship for the hosts. The duo added 20 runs in the last two overs of the powerplay.

THE MIDDLE OVERS

Raina was striking it exceptionally well while Faf had also started to up the ante. The two made a partnership of 83 runs. We got two quick wickets just at the right time and dismissed these two well-settled batters.

Axar Patel looped it up to Faf right after being hit for a six, thereby inviting him to go big again in the 14th over. Gabbar took a well-judged catch at long-off and out came the signature thigh-five celebration.

Suchith got the wicket of the dangerous Raina in the very next over. The youngster came back extremely well after being smashed for 14 in the first three balls. He beat Raina in flight and a swivelling Dhawan held on to the catch at point despite tumbling.

With Dhoni and Jadeja out in the middle now, Chennai's scoreboard read 102/3 at the end of 15 overs.

THE TARGET

Jadeja played a good cameo of 25 off 10 while MSD smashed 44 off 22 to help CSK reach a total of 179/4 in 20 overs. CSK finished quite well and set up a massive total considering the uneven wicket at Chepauk.

THE POWERPLAY: ACT 2

We did not get to the best of starts as Chahar got Shaw's wicket in the first over itself. Dhawan and Iyer took the stride and were smashing the ball sweetly until the end of five overs. The left-right combination was working quite well and the two had started to break loose. They were timing the ball fantastically well and finding boundaries regularly.

Gabbar tried to sweep Harbhajan in the 6th over but the ball beat him, and he was out bowled. At the end of the powerplay, we were at 59 for 2 and in dire need of building another partnership.

THE MIDDLE OVERS

Things did not go according to plan for us and CSK's spinners started spinning a web. Imran Tahir sent Pant back to the hut as he attempted to go for a maximum but found Bravo at long-off. We also lost the wicket of Ingram in the very next over. Jadeja got him out LBW.

Skipper Iyer was batting well at one end but wickets kept falling at the other. We were 80/4 at the end of 10 overs and still in with a chance if a solid partnership was built.

Imran Tahir dismissed Axar Patel and Sherfane Rutherford in the 11th over. This really dented our hopes. Later in the 12th over, Jadeja also got two more wickets. Both Morris and Shreyas Iyer were stumped by some smart keeping from MS Dhoni.

TOUGH LOSS:

With just 2 wickets in hand. Suchith was run out in the 16th over and Mishra edged one to Dhoni in the 17th over. Eventually, we were bowled out for 99 runs.

The tough loss puts us in the 2nd spot on the IPL table while CSK move to the top with 18 points.

A tough day at the office for our boys but all’s not lost as we head to #QilaKotla for our final league stage game of the season and the boys would aim to put on a good show in our last home game of 2019.

THE QUOTE:

"It's a good reality check for us. Everyone will be on their toes in the next match. We definitely want to finish in the Top 2." - Shreyas Iyer
