PBKS vs DC | A hard-fought loss against Punjab Kings in season opener

Our Tata IPL 2024 campaign started with a tough loss against Punjab Kings (PBKS), who won by 4 wickets at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur.

We were put in to bat first at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium, which became the 36th stadium to host an IPL match.

Our opening pair gave us a solid start and added 39 runs on the board before we lost Mitchell Marsh after a quickfire 20.

The scoring rate dropped after the dismissal wicket as we ended the Powerplay at 54/1.

Shai Hope's stay in the middle provided stability before he was dismissed on 33 runs by Harshal Patel.

Our skipper, Rishabh Pant, donned the Delhi Capitals jersey after 672 days. A memorable moment for the cricketing fraternity!

He looked on course to build a good innings but was dismissed for 18 runs.

After a difficult period in the middle overs, Abishek Porel came on as the Impact Player, replacing Ricky Bhui, to accelerate the scoring rate in the final overs.

Porel made an instant impact with the bat, scoring a quick-fire 32 runs off 10 balls, including 25 runs in the final over against an in-form Harshal Patel.

The final-over blitzkrieg helped us score 174/9 by the end of the innings.

We didn't have the best of starts with the ball and conceded 34 in the first 3 overs. However, Ishant Sharma got rid of the dangerous-looking Shikhar Dhawan for 22 and ran out Jonny Bairstow short of his crease at 9.

Prabhsimran Singh and Sam Curran kept the scoreboard ticking for Punjab Kings. At the halfway stage, Kuldeep Yadav got the wicket of well-set Prabhsimran Singh and in his next over Jitesh Sharma fell prey courtesy of a brilliant stumping by our captain, Rishabh Pant.

The DC skipper also gave his fans moments to rejoice as they were treated with his stump mic voice while advising and motivating the bowlers from behind the stumps.

Khaleel Ahmed brought us back into the game in the penultimate over, conceding only 4 runs and picking the 2 crucial wickets of Sam Curran and Shashank Singh.

This resulted in the game going down to the final over. However, the hosts, Punjab Kings, managed to secure the 2 points in the season opener.

Brief Scores: Punjab Kings 177/6 in 19.2 overs with Sam Curran 63(47), Liam Livingstone 38*(21); Kuldeep Yadav 2/20; beat Delhi Capitals 174/9 in 20 overs with Shai Hope 33(25), Abishek Porel 32*(10); Arshdeep Singh 2/28; by 4 wickets.

Player of the Match: Sam Curran.
