The Capitals Begin Second Half of IPL 2022 with Double over the Knight Riders

DC vs KKR in 50 words

A splendid bowling performance led by Kuldeep’s second 4-wicket haul vs KKR and Fizz’s domination in the death ensured we restricted the Knights for a modest total. An Axar cameo and a fiery Powell finish capped off a solid start from David Warner as we collected an important 2 points.

The Kuldeep and Fizz Show

The flip of the coin went Captain Pant’s way and he again decided to go for a chase at the Wankhede. There were two changes in the side, with Chetan Sakariya making his DC debut in place of the injured Khaleel Ahmed and Mitch Marsh making his way in after recovering from Covid.

The DC bowlers were off to a majestic start as the left-arm pace duo was spot on with the new ball. Sakariya on DC debut bowled a peach of a delivery to get an early breakthrough in his very first over with an in-swinger to rattle the timber behind Finch.

Both the openers were back in the dugout within the first 5 overs as Bapu struck early with his left-arm orthodox, dismissing Venkatesh Iyer cheaply. With that scalp, Axar achieved the milestone of 150 wickets in T20s.

KKR were put on the backfoot as DC ended the powerplay giving away only 29 runs, the third lowest powerplay total of the season.

Kuldeep Yadav was sensational as he continued his good form picking up two back-to-back wickets in his first over, dismissing the IPL debutant Indrajith caught at long-on followed by Narine, who found himself plumb in front of the wickets, getting a first ball duck.

Former DC captain Shreyas Iyer rebuilt the innings alongside Nitish Rana. Shreyas took a liking to Axar’s bowling, collecting a few boundaries on his way to 42, until Captain Pant grabbed a stunner behind the stumps off a Kuldeep delivery to dismiss the KKR captain.

The Kuldeep Show continued, as he went on to set up the danger-man Andre Russell beautifully to have him stumped for no score. It was his 2nd four-wicket haul against KKR this season, an absolutely spell-binding performance.

A fighting half-century by Nitish Rana and a late blitz from Rinku Singh in the last overs helped KKR get to a modest total with a partnership of 62. However, the Fizz did not let them add many more in the final over, where he struck thrice and only gave 2 runs away to restrict the Knights to 146/9.

Powell Power Finishes What the Bull Begins

Chasing 147, we lost our Shaw-stopper on the very first ball as Umesh Yadav took a stunning caught and bowled, giving KKR the perfect start. Mitch Marsh in his comeback game looked aggressive from the get-go as he went for a boundary over mid-on in the second over, followed by a flick shot to deep square which unfortunately fell in the safe hands of Venkatesh Iyer. Davey on the other end was off with a cracking first ball cut shot for a boundary.

Losing two early wickets didn’t stop Davey as he went on to score at least one boundary each over in the powerplay except the sixth, which ensured we ended the field restrictions phase with almost 50 on board.

Come the 8th over, an over the waist no-ball by Harshit Rana helped Lalit Yadav open up as he cleared it for a maximum over third man. The very next over, the duo brought up their 50-run stand with a 14-run over off part-timer Nitish Rana.

Umesh Yadav was brought back into the attack and turned out to be a good decision for KKR as he managed to dismiss in-form Warner with a bouncer for a good 42 off 26. The next two overs saw two quick dismissals as Lalit Yadav was trapped in front by a Sunil Narine delivery, followed by Rishabh Pant knicking off to the keeper as Umesh Yadav scalped his third.

Despite two new batsmen at the crease, the game was still under our control as the equation stood at 53 off 42. After one quiet over, Bapu went on to attack Russell with a boundary and a maximum off his first two balls, but the last ball of the same over saw a wicket gifted to the Knight Riders through a needless run out.

The next 3 overs saw an unleashed version of Powell. He smashed a maximum and a boundary off Venkatesh Iyer and then smoked another one over deep-square leg off Southee.

Scoring 33* off 16, he finished the game off in style with a powerful six that sailed over long-on to give the Capitals a thumping win with 6 balls and 4 wickets to spare.

The campaign is back on track, but the Capitals will continue to ROAR in a bid to book that Playoff spot!

Brief Scores

Kolkata Knight Riders 146/9 in 20 overs (Nitish Rana 57 off 34, Shreyas Iyer 42 off 37, Kuldeep Yadav 4/14, Mustafizur Rahman 3/18) beaten by Delhi Capitals 150/6 in 19 overs (David Warner 42 off 26, Rovman Powell 33* off 16, Umesh Yadav 3/24, Sunil Narine 1/19)
