Jain Coffee House is a quaint, seemingly unassuming café tucked away in the lanes of Chandni -Chowk. This well-loved establishment has been serving loyal patrons and wandering tourists since 1948 when Late Lala Shambhu Dayal Jain started the shop. Now, his two sons and grandson Abhishek Jain are proudly carrying on the family tradition.

The most popular offerings at the café are the fresh fruit sandwiches layered with paneer, slices of seasonal fruits and a secret condiment on top. This surprisingly successful recipe was a Eureka moment from the Jain family when they were looking to move away from the popularly used sandwich ingredients onion and garlic. Now, this delicacy along with their classic coffee keeps customers returning year after year from all corners of Delhi.

This lockdown has turned left even the perennially bustling streets of Chandni Chowk deserted, which has impacted Jain Coffee House and all businesses around it. It has also derailed the family’s plan to build on the success of their humble shop and expand to other locations. However, they remain cautiously optimistic of the future and the changes that will come with it.

While many Delhites are wary of the evolving landscape of Old Delhi and the infiltration of technology in the shops that dot those narrow lanes, Mr Jain understands and values the need to embrace change, “Technology may be changing the way we do things, but the look and feel of these markets and the warm disposition of the people will always remain the same. So, the people must have faith in the unshakeable spirit and charm of Purani Dilli, and welcome the change that is necessary to survive, rather than die out by refusing to let go of obsolete ways.”

Acting on this belief, the Jain Coffee House is working round the clock to set up an online cloud kitchen to deliver food right to their customers’ doorstep. So, now there is no excuse to not try this famous, generations old, family recipes. Order for delivery to drop into the café once Chandni Chowk reopens.
