Shikhar (69* off 52) and Shreyas’ (42 off 33) knocks were the highlight of a par first innings total. But, de Kock and Suryakumar raced to quickfire fifties to hand us our second loss of the season.
Shikhar Notches up a Fifty in Modest Total
Shreyas Iyer won an important toss and both teams have preferred to bat first in this tournament so far. All five of our wins and all four of Mumbai’s wins have come while defending a total. Hence, it was no surprise that Skipper Shreyas opted to bat first.
Shaw lost his wicket early mistiming a full ball from Boult to give the fielder at cover a dolly. Ajinkya Rahane walked in at number 3 on his DC debut and started off on the front foot, timing a couple of drives to perfection. As he went past 12, he brought up the milestone of 5000 T20 runs - a massive feat indeed.
However, Krunal trapped Jinks in the fifth over as we lost our second wicket in the powerplay. Shreyas joined Gabbar out in the middle, and the duo didn’t have trouble finding the boundaries. Dhawan absolutely clobbered a slog sweep off Krunal two balls after Rahane’s dismissal to bring up his 100th IPL maximum.
The left and right-hand combination was working well as both of them took a liking to the pace of Pattinson. His two overs to Iyer and Shikhar cost him five boundaries with Iyer scoring four of them - An array of good cricketing shots on both sides of the wicket. From 24/2, they had lifted us to 80/2 at the halfway mark.
Some tight bowling from MI dried up the boundaries from overs 11 to 13 before Dhawan ended the drought on the first ball of the 14th. In a bid to up the ante, Iyer holed out at deep mid-wicket handing Krunal his second wicket and ending the Dhawan-Iyer partnership worth 85 runs.
Shikhar Dhawan celebrated his return to form by bringing up his 38th IPL fifty, equalling the record for the second-most half-centuries in the history of the tournament. In the same over, Stoinis beat mid-off on either side off successive deliveries, showing his prowess in these situations. Unfortunately though, just as he was getting into his groove, he lost his wicket after a horrible mix up with Dhawan.

Quinton, Suryakumar End our 3-Match Streak with Fifties
Rabada, Nortje and Axar started off right on the money, with three economical overs to begin with. But once he got in, de Kock launched into Ashwin. Axar came back to get the big wicket of Rohit for a low score, but Quinton de Kock was still going strong with two more sixes from Nortje’s second over, the last of the powerplay.
Quinton’s form was looking ominous. He brought up a solid fifty in the ninth over and was threatening to take it away from us. Just on cue, Ravi Ashwin struck to send him back for 53 just before the end of the 10th over.
The loss of de Kock didn’t deter Suryakumar Yadav one bit. He showed off his range of strokes to notch up a quickfire 50 off just 30 balls. Just after the milestone, Rabada got rid of him to make it 21 IPL games in a row with at least one wicket to his name.
Hardik Pandya did not have a birthday to remember, walking back for a second-ball duck with Stoinis picking up the scalp. However, with just 33 left to get from 28 deliveries, it seemed like a case of ‘too little, too late.’
KG also accounted for Ishan Kishan before getting done for the night with 2/28 from his four overs. With just 10 needed from 12 deliveries, Nortje bowled a brilliant 3-run 19th to keep hopes alive. Alas, Krunal and Pollard ticked over the seven runs required from the final six balls to take the W and join us at 10 points on the table.
