DD vs KXIP: Heartbreak at the Kotla

In a Nutshell

The DD think tank made some bold calls ahead of this crucial encounter, with five changes made to the playing eleven. That’s almost half the side. It’s a rarity in the VIVO IPL as teams generally look to chop and change as little as possible. Most of the changes worked. The people who came into the team, the likes of Liam Plunkett, Avesh Khan and Daniel Christian did an outstanding job with the ball to restrict Punjab to 143 in their 20 overs. But, the batting faltered again.

Fully Charged Pace Battery

Youngster Avesh Khan impressed one and all with his opening over. He hurried both the openers with some raw pace! Aaron Finch, a man brought up on pacy and bouncy Australian wickets, perished after struggling to time a pull shot off a Khan delivery clocked at 148.7 kmph. The 21-year-old had announced himself with his first over.

Our debutants kept enthralling us all. Plunkett picked up the wicket of the dangerous KL Rahul in the fifth over, his first in the VIVO IPL. In his second, he went through Mayank Agarwal and found the timber. That delivery was bowled at 146 kmph. The DD pace attack was breathing fire.

Yuvraj Singh and Karun Nair struggled to get going through the middle overs. The six overs after the powerplay only produced 25 runs as the bowlers built a lot of pressure. Courtesy of the pressure, Yuvraj Singh was dismissed in the 13th over trying to up the run rate. The nine overs after the powerplay yielded just 49 runs. David Miller was dropped twice in two overs, at 7 and 11. To rub salt in Mishra’s wounds, Miller launched him into the stands a couple balls later.

Meanwhile, Plunkett was relentless. He picked up his third VIVO IPL wicket in his third over. The man was on a roll and he could do no wrong! He made no mistake with Miller’s catch off Christian’s bowling in the 18th over. Third time unlucky for Miller, and his wicket at that stage probably saved us 10-15 runs at the death.

In the final four overs, we only gave away 27 runs and took four wickets, with Trent Boult picking up two in the last over. In the process, he went past Sunil Narine to take the Purple Cap.

It was a clinical bowling display throughout the 20 overs. Half the job was done.

Shreyas Iyer – A Lone Ranger

It was a day for debutants! Prithvi Shaw absolutely cracked a square cut right from the meat of the bat to send the ball racing to the ropes. In the first two overs, he had already scored 22 runs with four boundaries. Despite losing his wicket in the third over, he had gotten us off to a quick start.

Struggling for form, Glenn Maxwell and Gautam Gambhir departed soon after. We’d lost three wickets in the powerplay, but made a decent 48 runs. The pair that bailed us out of trouble in the previous encounter, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were out in the middle. They wouldn’t repeat the same feat again as Mujeeb Ur Rahman bowled Pant with a ripper.

The situation worsened when Christian was run-out. In a relatively small chase of 144, we’d lost half our side for 76.

After 15 overs, we’d put up 96/5 on the board. Shreyas Iyer was still holding fort with the odd boundary off loose balls. Forty-three runs were required from the final four overs and Rahul Tewatia took the risks in this situation and connected well. The first ball of the 17th over was deposited in the stands straight over Sran’s head. Fifteen runs came off that over and it seemed that the tide had turned in our favour. With a tight 18th over from Andrew Tye and the wicket of Rahul Tewatia, the game was see-sawing. Things were getting tense.

Then, Barinder Sran conceded just 4 runs in the 19th over. The game was slipping away, yet again. This left Shreyas Iyer too much to do in the 20th. Iyer batted brilliantly well for his fifty, but he was a lone ranger. He almost got the seventeen runs required, but it wasn’t meant to be as we fell short by 4 runs.

Brief Scores: KXIP 143/8 in 20 overs (Karun Nair 34 off 32, David Miller 26 off 19, Liam Plunkett 3/17, Trent Boult 2/21); DD 139/8 in 20 overs (Shreyas Iyer 57 off 45, Rahul Tewatia 24 off 21, Ankit Rajpoot 2/23, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 2/25)
