In a Nutshell
Shreyas Iyer lost the toss and we were put in to bat first. DD fielded three debutants on the night – Sandeep Lamichhane, Junior Dala and Abhishek Sharma. This was the first time an IPL team fielded three players aged 18 or less – Prithvi Shaw, Sandeep and Abhishek.
We lost both our openers early but DD’s most trusted pair this season, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, put on a 93-run stand for the third wicket. Rishabh Pant was at his belligerent best once again, smashing 61 from just 34 balls. Abhishek Sharma, one of our three debutants on the night, stylishly sent the ball to all parts of the Kotla and scored a 19-ball 46. We ended up with 181/4 from our 20 overs, a fighting total.
The second innings started the same way the first did. The batting side lost both their openers within the third over. Post that, Virat Kohli (70 off 40) and AB de Villiers (72* off 37) got together for another 100 plus stand to get the Bengaluru based franchise into a commanding position. As the required run rate diminished, the chase became a formality, and RCB registered a 5-wicket win with 6 balls to spare.
Brutal Pant, Stylish Sharma
It wasn’t the greatest of starts as we lost Prithvi Shaw to Chahal in the very first over. Jason Roy middled a couple beautifully, but Chahal soon went through him and hit the stumps. We’d lost two wickets within the third over. Yet again, the onus was on Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant to revive the DD innings.
Despite the bad start, it was a decent powerplay with 44 runs at the loss of two wickets. Rishabh Pant was putting on a show again. In the 8th over, he took Siraj apart with two back-to-back sixes, one over mid-wicket and one over long-off. Pant and Iyer have been DD’s most prolific pair this season, and they continued their brilliant run this season with another fifty partnership.

Rishabh Pant brought up his fourth fifty this season in the 12th over. It’s been an unbelievable season for an unbelievable player! He lost his wicket on the final ball of the thirteenth over for a vital 61 off 34 balls which included 5 fours and 4 sixes. During the course of the innings, he reclaimed the Orange Cap and also went past Gautam Gambhir’s record for the most runs scored by a DD player in a single VIVO IPL season with 582 runs.
Shreyas Iyer departed soon after and it looked like we would struggle to get to an above-par total. The debutant Abhishek Sharma had other ideas. He went over mid-off the first ball he faced in the VIVO IPL and collected a boundary. In the next over, the 17-year-old smashed Tim Southee for 20 runs. That over saw two sixes and a four come off his bat, the first of those was an extremely stylish lofted hit straight over the bowler’s head. He scored another six with a pick-up shot over mid-wicket and yet another one with an upper-cut over third man. The youngster was putting on an exhibition.
The final over added another 13 runs to the tally, with Sharma scoring another six and a four. His innings of 46* from 19 balls had powered us to a competitive 181/4. He had set the VIVO IPL alight in his first game.
Sandeep Impresses but RCB Finish in a Canter
Nepal’s first cricketer in the VIVO IPL, Sandeep Lamichhane opened the bowling for us. The 17-year-old bowled a tight first over, creating a couple of close chances. The pressure Sandeep created paid dividends in the next over, as Moeen Ali spliced one to cover off Boult’s bowling. In the third over, Lamichhane claimed his first wicket in the tournament, trapping Parthiv Patel right in front as he attempted a sweep. At 17 years and 283 days, he was the third youngest to do so. What a moment it was for the young man!

Junior Dala didn’t start off on the right note, giving away 17 runs in his first over. Virat Kohli has played at the Kotla all his life, and he was timing them beautifully. In spite of the two wickets lost, the powerplay yielded 58 runs for the visiting side. Virat Kohli brought up his 34th VIVO IPL fifty in the ninth over. RCB were getting on a roll.
As RCB reached the 100-run mark in the 11th over, things were slipping away for us. 79 runs were required from 54 balls with 8 wickets in hand and both Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers at the crease.
The 118-run stand between them took the game away from DD, and we never really got back into it even after Kohli’s wicket. In the end, RCB got to the win with 5 wickets and an over to spare.
