Gambhir Steps Down as DD Captain, Iyer Handed Reigns

A Bold Call

It was a regular Wednesday afternoon for Gautam Gambhir’s and DD’s fans, that’s until the announcement came through a presser at 4 PM. Gautam Gambhir, of his own volition, had decided to step down as captain of DD. It was a bold call, and once again brought out Gambhir’s “team always comes first” nature.

“I feel that it’s time to step down, and I’ve announced Shreyas Iyer as the next captain. I think that is the way forward for the franchise,” said the prolific leader. It might seem ironic that we’ve used the word leader just when he’s decided to no longer lead a team. But, is it really?

A leader does what’s best for the team. A leader always puts the interests of the team ahead of his own personal interests. Gautam Gambhir has done just that. With his last act as the leader of DD, he’s defined one.

“I’d like to definitely say well done and congratulations on Gautam for putting the team ahead of his own individual thoughts. It takes and shows a lot of great character,” added Ricky Ponting. Ponting himself, considered one of the best captains world cricket has seen, has been in the same boat before. And as great leaders do, he took a tough call, a similar one.

In 2013, after a string of poor performances Ricky Ponting had stepped down as captain of the Mumbai Indians. They went on to win the VIVO IPL title that season. “Having been in the same situation myself a number of years ago, obviously it’s a tough decision for anybody to make, to put their hand up and say that they think their performances haven’t been good enough,” said Ponting.

Gautam Gambhir also made it clear that it was entirely his decision to step down, citing his poor performances and his inability to consistently do something he had been doing throughout his captaincy career with aplomb – leading from the front.

Gautam Gambhir has been an inspiration to many and always will be. But, now that his captaincy career at DD has ended, and it’s time for Shreyas Iyer to take over.

Shreyas Iyer – The Way Forward for DD

The complete faith that Gautam Gambhir has showed in Shreyas Iyer’s potential as a leader should fill the fans with confidence. Shreyas Iyer was Gautam Gambhir’s nomination. “We all think that he will do a very good job and we think he’s the right man to take this franchise and this team forward,” said the former DD captain.

The same faith echoed in Ponting’s words as well. “I also fully endorse Shreyas Iyer as our next captain. He’s obviously a terrific young player. He’s a terrific young man that I see as having a huge future in the game and a huge future as the leader of the Delhi Daredevils.”

Shreyas Iyer accepted the role gracefully. “Firstly, I would like to thank the management and the coaches and Gauti Bhai for selecting me as the captain. I think it’s a great honour,” said the youngster.

The trio still believe that the squad has the potential to turn things around. Of course, it’s no mean task. It’s extremely difficult from the situation they find themselves in and they acknowledge that. However, the belief is still there. As head coach, Ricky praised Gambhir’s tough call and said that this could provide the DD outfit with a “fresh start” for the second half of the tournament.

Shreyas Iyer’s first statement as captain of DD was a powerfully positive one. Iyer believes that the team still has the capability to go all the way in VIVO IPL 2018. “We have eight games in our hand, and there are lots of us who still believe we can do something great. I don’t see any negative thoughts coming onto my mind,” said the newly appointed skipper. Two extraordinary leaders sitting beside him, Gambhir and Ponting would have been immensely proud of that statement from a young leader given his first captaincy stint in the VIVO IPL.
