The Capitals Roar Against the Super Kings to Make it Two in Two

CSK vs DC in 50 Words

Prithvi Shaw raced off the blocks and put CSK spinners to the sword in Gabbar’s company before Pant provided the finishing touches. A thoroughly disciplined bowling performance from the DC attack led by Rabada and Nortje closed the game.

This is New Delhi, and this win was a statement.

First Real Look at Prithvi Shaw 2.0

The senior statesman MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to put us in to bat first. We had two changes, one of them forced with Mishra replacing the injured Ashwin. Avesh Khan too got himself a game, with Mohit Sharma missing out.

The match started with a reprieve for Prithvi Shaw as replays showed a snick on the second delivery of the match. No one appealed. No complaints from Shaw either, of course. He started with a positive mindset though, punching Chahar off the backfoot and off the frontfoot for boundaries off consecutive deliveries.

Shaw was going about batting his merry way, crossing the milestone of 1000 T20 runs as he passed 23. It wasn’t a high scoring powerplay, but it was a steady start with 36/0 on the board.

Spin came into the attack in the form of Chawla in the 7th over, but that didn’t change Shaw’s intentions one bit. With two fierce cuts, he added two more to his column of ‘4s’.

Gabbar joined the party with a sweetly timed slog sweep off Jadeja to bring up a well-compiled 50-run stand with a maximum.

The Prithvi show continued with a couple of lofted inside out drives to the leg-spinner. The DC openers were taking a liking to the CSK tweakers.

The 20-year-old brought up a superb fifty in the 10th over, but the openers didn’t display any signs of stopping. Dhawan played a nonchalant loft over cover, and Shaw followed it up with a brutal slog sweep.

Unfortunately, just as the pair was approaching a century partnership, Shikhar Dhawan (35 off 27) was trapped in front after an attempted reverse sweep.

After such a great start, it wasn’t much of a surprise that Rishabh Pant walked in to capitalise. However, Shaw lost his wicket soon after, stumped off Chawla for a magnificent 64 off 43.

Iyer joined Pant at the crease. This time around, a rescue act was not what was required.

Rishabh Pant got two glorious boundaries away before the 15th over, a sweep over short-fine leg and a cover drive to push the score to 124/2. Pant had four added to his score courtesy of a freebie, a strange overthrow past him and the keeper by Sam Curran. The next over saw Iyer deposit a full toss into the square leg fence. It was time to go hell for leather, but multiple boundaries in an over were hard to come by.

The explosive left-hander made amends for the same with two boundaries through and over cover in a 11-run Hazlewood over. A tight 19th from Curran including the wicket of the skipper was followed by an expensive 20th to take our total to a commendable 175/3.

Of Miserly Spinners and Fire-Breathing Pacers

Swing, pace and accuracy - The first over of the second innings was just the perfect start from Rabada, giving away just 2 runs. With his impressive record against Watson in mind, Axar Patel was given the new ball at the other end. Shaw dropped a sitter off Nortje at mid-wicket to give Watson a lease of life.

He wasn’t so lucky the next time around, with a pull off Axar carrying straight to Hetmyer at deep square. The Axar vs Watson battle went in the former’s favour once again, with Patel accounting for the opener for the sixth time in the IPL in just 43 deliveries bowled to him!

Our bowlers were tightening the screws on the Super Kings as Nortje picked up his maiden IPL wicket with a short ball that rushed onto Vijay. With 34/2 on the board for CSK, we definitely had the better of the powerplay.

Axar and Mishra were not giving anything away as the next three overs produced just 10 runs. The pressure was building, and it led to another wicket with the rookie Ruturaj finding himself short of the crease on the first ball of the 10th over.

It wasn’t a great day in the field for us, though. Hetmyer put down Faf du Plessis at the point boundary to make it two drops for the day. Amit Mishra finished an economical spell in the 13th over, having conceded just 23 runs - A top spell from the experienced campaigner.

The pressure was building with each passing minute as the required run rate rocketed up to 15 with 7 overs to go and 105 runs to get.

The Super Kings weren’t able to get the regular boundaries they required, as Rabada and Nortje bowled good areas to their former Protea skipper and Jadhav. Kedar departed in the 16th over, giving Nortje his second scalp of the night and leaving Dhoni and du Plessis a Herculean task ahead of them.

The 18th over saw another catch hit the grass, Hetmyer dropping his second. Rabada found the edge of Faf’s bat as his run of luck and our string of dropped catches finally came to an end. With this catch, ‘c Pant b Rabada’ was written into IPL scorebooks for the 12th time since the 2019 season, the most number of dismissals for a Bowler-wicketkeeper combination by a country mile, six to be precise.

It was all Protea Fire at the death, as Nortje (2/21) and Rabada (3/26) finished the job in style to complete a 44-run win over the three-time champions.

The Roars were louder than the Whistles tonight as we capped off an incredible game with clinical bowling. This win against the Super Kings after 861 days will give the boys a lot of satisfaction.
