DC vs CSK in 50 Words
Faf anchored the innings with 58, and our death bowling was off the mark for the first time as Rayudu and Jadeja added 50 off 21. Chasing 180, Dhawan sent the ball to all parts of Sharjah to notch up his maiden IPL century before Axar finished the game spectacularly.
Faf Fifty and Fiery Finish Take CSK to a Strong Total
Mixed emotions at the toss for DC fans. Shreyas Iyer was match-fit and took his place at the toss. However, MS Dhoni called it right and opted to bat first. Surprisingly, Tushar Deshpande took the new ball for the first over, and he made it count with the wicket of Sam Curran off a sharp short ball.
Kagiso Rabada followed it up with a maiden over to keep the pressure on du Plessis and Watson. Two overs up, two runs on the board.
On either side of a tight fourth over from Axar Patel were a couple of expensive overs - a 10-run third from Tushar and a 14-run fifth over from Nortje. Despite that, it was a good powerplay for us, having conceded just 39/1, the lowest powerplay score in this year’s edition at this venue.
Both our finger spinners tightened the screws in the next couple of over as well, giving away only 8 runs.

At 47/1 after 48 balls of the innings, du Plessis and Watson decided it was time to go for it. The next three overs by Axar, Ashwin and Tushar yielded 9, 15 and 14 runs respectively. The duo of Faf and Watson were set, and the partnership had to be broken sooner rather than later. Anrich Nortje heard DC fans’ pleas and hit the top of off to dismiss Watson for 36 before he could do more damage.
Another day, another sub-24 run spell from Axar Patel as he finished his four overs with figures of 0/23. Rabada had only two overs left in his quota, but Shreyas chose to bring him back into the attack in the 15th over. He delivered with the wicket of Faf du Plessis (58 off 47) as Dhawan redeemed himself for the drop earlier with a spectacular catch running in from long on.
As for Rabada, he created history by becoming the fastest ever to 50 IPL wickets - breaking the record comfortably, in five fewer games than the second-placed Sunil Narine.
Rayudu deposited a couple of maximums over the short boundaries at Sharjah, but Nortje struck again to get rid of MS Dhoni with a slower delivery. Jadeja joined Rayudu with 21 balls remaining in the innings, and the duo executed their big hits well. Probably the best death bowling unit in the tournament so far, our bowlers were just a little off tonight as the duo accumulated one four and five sixes to add 50 runs for the fifth wicket. The number for us to chase - 180.

It was a nightmarish start for us and Shaw once again, as the aggressive opener lost his wicket for a duck on the second ball. Despite the wicket maiden first up, Dhawan didn’t hesitate to play his shots, getting Curran and Chahar away for three boundaries in the next two overs. Rahane absolutely cracked a pull through the covers early on, but unfortunately he couldn’t contribute much more as Chahar got his second wicket, courtesy of a sharp catch at point.
After a stoppage in play due to another injury scare for Shreyas Iyer, the captain found his feet at the crease. The final over of the powerplay saw Iyer play a beautiful lofted on drive all the way over the ropes. Shot of the day. Or so we thought. The scoreboard read 41 for 2 when the field restrictions lifted, an even powerplay.
Shikhar Dhawan was given a life on 25 when Chahar dropped him at deep square leg, and he rubbed salt on Super Kings’ wounds immediately with back-to-back boundaries. He hit consecutive boundaries yet again off Karn Sharma’s bowling. Just before the halfway mark, he brought up a brilliant fifty from just 29 balls, his third in a row.

Soon after reaching the milestone, Gabbar was dropped by Dhoni on 50. He then took Curran for two fours, a slap down the ground and an exquisite cover drive. Dhawan wasn’t taking his foot off the pedal for a moment.

Shreyas Iyer did just what was required and played second fiddle to Shikhar throughout their partnership of 68, with a run-a-ball 23. Stoinis joined the southpaw after the skipper’s dismissal, and didn’t take much time to get going. He took the attack to Karn Sharma, making the most of overpitched deliveries with a six straight over his head and a four over cover.
At the other end, there was no stopping Dhawan. He was toying with the bowlers now. The sweep off Bravo’s bowling was proof enough that he was seeing them like a football. We were going on smoothly in the chase, with 51 runs to get from the final five overs.
The 16th over saw Dhawan receive yet another life, this time Rayudu gifting him the dropped catch. However, Marcus departed a couple of deliveries later. He had done his job though, scoring a quick cameo of 24.
Curran took a beating once more from Shikhar’s blade. He was making the Super Kings pay for his reprieves yet again. The left-hander hit him for a four and a checked drive for six over long on to take him into the nineties. That short-arm jab made us go “Shot of the day!” once more. This time, no arguments were welcome.
Carey wasn’t getting his timing right, and on the other hand Dhawan could do no wrong. He manufactured another one of those sweeps off a fast bowler, this time Thakur was the victim.
Two overs left, and 21 was the magic number to get. The pressure was unimaginable, but Curran managed to produce a gem of an over to send our heart rates right up! Dhawan knocked over a single to reach his maiden IPL century. A superlative innings, but he wasn’t celebrating. Just not yet.
With 17 needed from six and Bravo off the field, Jadeja took the ball. Axar Patel took full toll and smashed three sixes to take us home with a ball to spare. The centurion, the match-winner and every DC fan could now finally celebrate a special, special win.
