VIVO IPL 2018: DD Season Preview

Let’s put the ghosts of the last 10 years behind us and let’s start all over again.
To usher in a new era, DD will go into the biggest T20 extravaganza of the year, the VIVO IPL 2018 season, with some of the biggest names in the world of cricket. The masterstroke was the appointment of Ricky Ponting as the head coach by the team management. He needs no introduction. He’s a winner through and through, and that’s exactly what we’ve been looking for.

Another triumphant move by the DD management was to bag the dynamic southpaw, Gautam Gambhir. It was a fairytale homecoming. To have Gambhir as the captain of the franchise is a win-win situation for the fans and the young guns of the team. For players willing to learn and grow, Gauti bhai is an inspiration with a storehouse of experience. With him, DD have a more-than-capable leader at the helm. Gambhir and Ponting are a deadly combination as the former fits perfectly into the latter’s ideologies and scheme of things.

The Depth of the DD squad:

The DD squad has the perfect composition in the form of youth and experience. The Dilli side looks balanced with the right mix of cricketers. We’ve got up and coming talent like Prithvi Shaw, Manjot Kalra, Abhishek Sharma and Sandeep Lamichhane along with some established stalwarts in the shape of Gambhir, Maxwell and Boult. We have 10 all-rounders and 14 specialists in the form of batsmen and bowlers.

We can bat deep and trouble any opposition with our bowling options. In each role, we’ve got match-winners in their own right. Here is a more detailed look at our squad.

The Batsmen:

The DD think-tank had retained the talented trio of Shreyas Iyer, Chris Morris and Rishabh Pant, and roped in stalwarts such as Glenn Maxwell and Colin Munro, who have a reputation of taking the attack to the opposition right from the word go. Add the incredibly consistent Gautam Gambhir to the list and one can certainly say that the squad has a mix of devastating batsmen, with guys who can play an anchor role and bail the team out of trouble in times of need.

Get ready to witness calmness and destruction at its best. Jason Roy, the big-hitting English batsman will also be one to watch out for. The U-19 lads Prithvi Shaw and Manjot Kalra will surely have a point to prove too, having already displayed some fine batting in the early stages of their career.

The Bowlers:

In the bowling department, a mix of wily spinners and lethal pacers provides great balance for the line-up and a threat for any opposition. The services of the South African spearhead, Kagiso Rabada will be missed as an unfortunate injury has ruled him out of the upcoming season of the VIVO IPL. This untimely and unfortunate injury is a huge loss for us, but the likes of Trent Boult, Mohammed Shami and Chris Morris will make sure we don’t miss him too much.

Boult will go into the VIVO IPL season with some wonderful performances under his belt, having troubled the opposition batsmen in the recently concluded series vs England, while Shami and Morris can equally add value with their pace and swing. Other speedsters include Avesh Khan, Sayan Ghosh and Harshal Patel, who have done reasonably well in the Indian domestic circuit and await to make it big on the grand stage.

Talking about the spinners, our own Mishi bhai will lead the attack from the front, along with Jayant Yadav, Shahbaz Nadeem and Sandeep Lamichhane giving him company. Amit Mishra is one of the most reliable bowlers in this format and someone who has staggering numbers to prove his worth. With three IPL hattricks and the highest number of VIVO IPL wickets among spinners, his stats precede him.

The All-rounders:

DD has a repository of all-rounders who can switch roles as and when the need arises. Chris Morris and Dan Christian can be brutal on any given day with their hard-hitting abilities and nippy pace. Gurkeerat Singh and Vijay Shankar have tons of experience playing for their respective domestic sides and will be looking to take that experience and turn it into match-winning performances for us. Abhishek Sharma performed well in the recently concluded U-19 World Cup and would be eager to make a mark in the VIVO IPL too.

But perhaps, the most exciting name in our list of all-rounders is Glenn Maxwell. He was our most expensive buy, and not surprisingly so. Opponents are always weary of such mavericks, and Maxi sure does have the aura. The Big Show is here to entertain, and most importantly, to win games of cricket for us.

Schedule:

We play our first five games away from home. Five consecutive games on the road can sound like a daunting task, but it’s also an opportunity. It gives us the chance to begin the season well and then head to the Kotla, where we know the conditions best.

The fans will have to wait to see their favourite team play at the Kotla, but good things take time, don’t they? If we manage to get some good momentum on our side, then it will be a confidence booster for us going into the home games. Beginning the season well is key. Towards the business end of our campaign, we will play seven of our last nine games at home. With a good start, it’s going to be advantage DD.

Key Factors to DD’s success:

Dynamic Captain: In Gautam Gambhir, we have a captain who knows the art of taking a team to the finish line. Winning is all that matters. His dynamism is second to none. He leads from the front and knows how to get the best out of young players. What’s more? He’s determined, and he’s got unfinished business here.

Ferocious Power Hitters: If the reputation of our power hitters is anything to go by, then the DD fans sure have a few reasons to be excited! With the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Jason Roy, Colin Munro, and Chris Morris, we’ve got players who can make the boundary ropes a mere formality on their day. Their performances could very well define our campaign.

The Ponting Effect: Punter has already asserted that he is here to make the boys believe that they can win the VIVO IPL.  He has infused a positive and aggressive mindset into the team. The youngsters in the side are in awe of Ponting and are simply raring to go out there to perform and win. Don’t be surprised if you see the boys fired up like never before, that’s the Ponting effect.

Unconditional Love and Renewed Hope:

With the return of Gauti to his home turf, the Dilli fans are eagerly waiting for their captain to don the DD colours and take the field with his troops. Over the course of 10 years, our fans have been loyal and have come out in large numbers to support the team with unconditional love.

Their love has never faltered, and this time with Gambhir’s determination and Ponting’s approach rubbing off on the squad, there is enough reason for renewed hope among fans.

The fans are the spine of the team. They can create a storm with their loud and joyous cheers, and also uplift the team’s spirits entirely. Imagining packed stadiums, deafening support and a sea of blue & red has got us all excited for the season ahead. However, that will take some time considering that we’re on the road for the first five games.

We begin our campaign against the Kings XI Punjab on the 8th of April at 4 PM. Dear fans, this season, we give you the liberty to hope.
