Delhi Capitals Bring IPL 2022 Campaign Back on Track with Clinical Display Against Punjab Kings

DC vs PBKS in 50 words

It was a great display of character and discipline from the Delhi bowlers as Axar, Lalit, Kuldeep and Khaleel all picked up 2-fors to derail Punjab’s innings. An explosive start from Shaw and Warner ensured that the small chase was done and dusted at a canter.

A Team Effort with the Ball

After some troubles with COVID over the last few days and a change in the venue, the Northern Derby received a green signal to go ahead at the Brabourne Stadium. Our DC Men in Blue won the toss and put the Kings in to bat first. With the unavailability of Marsh, Sarfaraz found his way back into the XI.

The Punjab openers started very well with a few good boundaries in the first three overs. Come the 4th over, the skipper Pant went a little left-field and brought in Lalit Yadav, the man with the golden arm. He was right on the money, dismissing Shikhar Dhawan cheaply, getting the first breakthrough for the team.

Gabbar’s wicket was the start of a procession. Punjab skipper Mayank was bowled in the very next over as he played on a Mustafizur delivery. With two new right-handed batsmen on the crease, Bapu was called into the attack. The left-arm orthodox bowler was bang on target in his very first over. The in-form Punjab star Liam Livingstone danced down the track and Bapu dragged the length back cleverly to get him stumped. Three Punjab batters were back in the dugout in the powerplay!

Bairstow got going with two back-to-back boundaries against Fizz, but soon found himself in trouble with a bouncer from Khaleel, helping it straight into the hands of Mustafizur at fine leg. With 4 wickets in four consecutive overs, Punjab Kings found themselves well and truly on the backfoot as Delhi bowlers had taken over the control of the game.

Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh Khan looked to rebuild and the former got a few boundaries in too, until Bapu was called back into the attack. The very first ball of the 13th over, Jitesh Sharma was trapped in front of the stumps as the Kings sunk further into trouble.

Kuldeep continued his good form and picked up two quick wickets in the last over of his spell. First KG was beaten by his googly and in the next couple of minutes, Nathan Ellis was knocked out for a duck through the gate off his stock ball.

A length ball from Khaleel in the 16th over dismissed Shahrukh Khan as he edged the off-cutter giving away a regulation catch to Captain Pant. The tailenders did manage to complete the remaining quota of the overs, but it was an extraordinary performance by DC bowlers, dismissing their northern rivals for a score of 115.

It was an especially great night for Bapu as he produced a trademark economical spell, picking up 2 wickets for just 10 runs at an economy rate of 2.50 with 14 dot balls! When asked about his miserly spell by Harsha Bhogle on broadcast, Axar quipped, “Gujarati hoon na, toh bas…”

The Shaw-Warner Carnage

The first three inswingers by Vaibhav Arora did create a scare for Shaw, but the pocket dynamo soon found his zone with a flick and a punch for back-to-back boundaries on the last two balls of the very first over.

It was raining boundaries at the Brabourne as Shaw and Warner were unstoppable going for almost every ball, bringing up a fifty run partnership in just 3.3 overs.

The duo had absolutely unleashed themselves, with at least 3 boundaries coming in every over of the powerplay except the 2nd and 6th. After the powerplay, we were 81 for no loss, which became not only the highest powerplay score in IPL 2022, but also our highest powerplay tally in the history of the IPL.

After an opening partnership of 83 runs off 39 balls, Shaw perished for a brilliant 41 off 20 balls, achieving the milestones of 1500 IPL runs and 2000 T20 runs during the course of the blitz.

On the other hand, Warner brought up an hat-trick of half centuries, scoring his 53rd IPL fifty and extending his hold on the record of the most fifties in the competition. Along with that, he became the first player to score 1000 runs against Punjab Kings.

The DC boys sealed the chase by scoring 119/1 in just 10.3 overs. Warner scored the winning runs with 57 balls to spare, making it the biggest win in the IPL history in terms of balls to spare while chasing 100+ runs.

The dugout was all smiles, and why wouldn’t they be?
