Delhi Capitals’ Hard-Fought Battle Against the Royals Goes in Vain

DC vs RR in 50 words

A fiery batting display by Buttler, Padikkal, and Samson helped the Royals put up a mammoth total of 222. But the Capitals took up the challenge and put in a resilient fight until the very last over, where Powell’s heroics fell just short.

Buttler Serves Up an IPL Special

After a clinical display in the Northern Derby, the DC boys were back at the Wankhede to take on the in-form Rajasthan Royals. Winning the toss, skipper Pant put the Royals in to bat first. Both the teams went ahead with unchanged XIs.

Khaleel was right on point with his out-swingers to trouble Jos in the first over, and can count himself unlucky to beat the bat and find the edges but not his wicket. Shardul started with a maiden over at the other end, keeping the Rajasthan openers contained with the new ball spell. Lalit Yadav was brought into the attack early and it proved to be a good decision as the offie gave away just 6 runs from 2 overs in the powerplay.

In between those two overs, Padikkal attacked Fizz scoring three consecutive boundaries. The last over of the powerplay by Khaleel saw Buttler take the attack to DC as he scored 15 runs to complete the powerplay with an opening partnership of 44.

But this was just the beginning as the opening duo unleashed themselves after the powerplay and went into full attack mode, bringing up a 100-run partnership in 11 overs. The onslaught continued, as Buttler peppered every part of the boundary and Padikkal offered more than good support.

By the time Khaleel got the first breakthrough on the first ball of the 16th over, Padikkal departed for a commendable 54 and Buttler was already on 99. A few balls later, Buttler brought up a scarcely believable 3rd century of the season. Samson was in the mood too, as he made the most of the set platform and built up on it with some blows of his own.

Jos’ majestic innings finally came to an end at 116 off the bowling of Mustafizur as Davey took a regulation catch on long-on, to bring up the milestone of 150 catches in T20s.

It was not the ideal first half for the DC tigers as the innings ended with a four and a maximum to record the highest score of IPL 2022.

This Team. This Fight.

Chasing 223, Prithvi Shaw started the proceedings with a boundary of the very first ball. A classy flick at mid-wicket was followed by a straight drive down the ground for another boundary to set the tempo for the chase.

At the other end, Warner also started his innings with a lofted drive over mid-off for a four, achieving another milestone of completing 10500 T20 runs.

The lethal opening duo managed to provide yet another solid foundation with a 43-run partnership, with a flurry of boundaries in just over 4 overs. Alas, we lost the in-form Warner as he edged a PRasidh delivery to the keeper.

In the very next over, Sarfarz perished, hitting a sweep shot into the hands of the fielder at square leg. In walked the captain, and he wasted no time getting on with it as he got off the mark with a wristy and unorthodox flick for four. After the powerplay, we had 55/2 on board.

A couple of relatively quiet overs followed, before Shaw and Pant opened up their shoulders to McCoy, collecting three boundaries, a six and a total of 26 runs from the 9th over. The highlight of the over being a one-handed six over covers, and you’d be forgiven to assume that it came off the bat of Pant and not Shaw.

Unfortunately, we lost Shaw at exactly the halfway mark of the innings for 37. But with Lalit Yadav and Pant at the crease, the chase was still on. Pant found his target in the part-timer Riyan Parag, taking him on for two biggies including a one-handed six of his own this time around.

It took a blinder by Padikkal to dismiss Captain Pant for 44, as he miscued one off Prasidh Krishna. The ball went straight up into the night sky for an eternity but somehow, Padikkal managed to hold on to our dismay.

Even after losing Axar and Shardul in quick succession, the fight was still on as all-rounder Lalit Yadav showed some creative hitting with a ramp shot for four to Boult and a slog sweep to Chahal for a maximum, to keep the scoreboard ticking.

The 17th over witnessed some clean hitting from Powell as he went for two huge sixes off Boult to get the equation down to 36 off 12.

Prasidh Krishna’s death bowling was sensational as he bowled a wicket-maiden in the 19th over,  dismissing Yadav. But the game wasn’t over yet as Powell wreaked havoc at the Wankhede by hitting three big sixes off the first three deliveries, the third of those coming off a high full toss creating a lot of on-field drama.

The result in the end didn’t go in our favour, but the DC boys and the fans can be proud of the fight we put up.
