Delhi Capitals Roar Back in Style Against Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR vs DC in 50 Words

Watching Shaw and Warner go about their business together was surreal. They set the tone for the perfect finish by Shardul and Axar to propel DC to 215/5. Khaleel removed the openers before Shreyas scored fifty, but Kuldeep (4/35) roared against his former franchise to seal the deal.

Shaw. Warner. RP17. Lord. Bapu. Wow.

The stage was set for our first match against KKR this season, with a host of players having switched franchises since last year. Former DC skipper and current KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and put us in to bat first. We’d made one change for the game, with the in-form Khaleel coming back in for Anrich Nortje.

Prithvi Shaw punched one through the off side for four on the first ball of the match to kick things off, and it wasn’t the only tribute he gave to Delhi legend Virender Sehwag on the night. The first three overs saw six fours, with five of those coming off Shaw’s blade.

When Pat Cummins came into the attack, David Warner properly joined the party with back-to-back cuts for four, before Shaw took on the Aussie for the first six. Warner brought up his first six after returning to Delhi off a sweetly timed slog sweep, and we were on song with 68/0 in the powerplay.

The pair of Shaw and Warner kept piling the runs and the boundaries, and the Shaw-stopper brought up a 27-ball fifty before being dismissed soon after. During the course of his blitz, Prithvi Shaw became only the 2nd player after Virender Sehwag to score over 1000 powerplay runs for the Delhi Capitals. The Nawab of Najafgarh would be proud, wouldn’t he?

Captain Pantastic walked in at number 3 and got going straight away, with a flurry of sweeps including a one-handed reverse sweep (A first even for Pant!). Rishabh took on Cummins for a six straight over his head, before Warner smashed Russell for a maximum to get to his first fifty in IPL 2022.

The next four overs saw four wickets fall, including Warner for 61. But there was more damage to come as Shardul and Axar got together for an ‘Aaram se’ partnership!

Here’s how the penultimate and final overs of the innings read after some carnage from the two all-rounders - 6 0 6 1 6 4 4 2 1 2 1 6. Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel had scored 39 from the last two overs to lift the Capitals to 215/5, the highest total of IPL 2022 so far.

Kuldeep and Khaleel Shine Bright

Mustafizur began proceedings hitting the right lengths and keeping things tight. Khaleel Ahmed struck with the wicket of Venkatesh Iyer just when he was breaking free with a few boundaries. Shreyas Iyer started his very first innings against DC with a four through covers, but Khaleel Ahmed picked up the wicket of the other opener Rahane as well in his very next over to peg KKR back.

Despite the modest powerplay, Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana consolidated and kept the scoreboard moving quickly with timely fours and sixes through the middle overs. Lalit Yadav turned out to be the man with the golden arm in the 12th over, breaking the all-important 69-run stand.

After the Rana-Iyer partnership, the DC bowlers led by Kuldeep Yadav and the growing scoreboard pressure just didn’t let any pair settle. The next five partnerships read 10, 16, 6, 4 and 0. The main man, Shreyas Iyer was also dismissed for 54 by Kuldeep off a fine stumping by Rishabh Pant.

In Kuldeep’s fourth over, he managed to get rid of three more KKR batters and pull off a stunner of a catch. The emotional celebration that followed showed just how much it meant to him. The match was all but sealed.

Andre Russell was losing batting partners, and a couple of overs of formalities followed before the Capitals came out with a commendable 44-run victory.

Talked about roaring back in style!
