Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians: Aiming for a hat-trick of wins

Two games, two wins and a whole lot to rejoice about! Our DC girls have started the inaugural TATA WPL season with a bang. After a stellar 60-run victory against RCB, Meg Lanning and Co. defeated our neighbours UP Warriorz by 42 runs at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy on Tuesday.

Once again, it was a mega show by our skipper with the bat which gave us a quick start. On either side of a rain interruption, the Australian stalwart smashed 70 runs off 42 balls to disarm the Warriorz bowlers.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey, meanwhile, maintained the momentum in the middle overs. Jemimah elevated the scoring with some clever shots, while Capsey hammered a couple of sixes in her 21-run blitz.

However, it was Jess Jonassen who grabbed the headlines, with both bat and ball. A swashbuckling 20-ball 42, with six impressive boundaries, helped us propel the team total to 211/4.

Then, with the ball, the left-arm Queenslander broke the backbone of the UPW batting lineup. Jonassen put DC on the ascendancy with wickets of the dangerous Alyssa Healy and Kiran Navgire.

One of the most eye-catching moments of our win at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy was the stunning catch from Radha Yadav to send Deepti Sharma back to the pavilion.

Yet, she believes that it was a simple catch for her!

Eventually, despite a fighting knock from Tahlia McGrath, our girls crossed the finish line, rather comfortably, giving us the second spot in the WPL 2023 points table.

Meanwhile, match-winner Jonassen talked about our “bundle of energy Jemi” and her aggressive cameo with the bat.

A Top of the Table Clash:

Just like our perfect start, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians, too, have won both their games so far. Post the 143-run drubbing of GG, MI beat RCB by nine-wickets in another all-round performance.

Considering our form, it promises to be an exciting top-of-the-table clash at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy on Thursday, March 9.

Once again, we expect our DC Toli to fill the stadium, supporting the girls in a crunch encounter. We hope to see you with all your roars!

What to expect?

Meg Lanning's Masterclass:

Lanning will eye another big score at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy. Our leading run-scorer, with 142 runs, can be expected to continue her rampage against MI. Lets see what the MEGASTAR has in store for us on Thursday.

Jess Jonassen - the all-rounder:

We simply cannot overstate the importance of Jonassen’s heroics against UPW. She is rather well-known for her ability to bamboozle batters with quality spin towards the death overs.

However, her batting came to the fore, rather spectacularly, the other night. Against the powerful MI lineup, her skills would be critical to making it a hat-trick of wins.

Another powerplay riot:

DC’s two powerplay scores in the WPL - 57/0 vs RCB and 62/0 vs UPW. Our openers Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma have been instrumental in providing quickfire starts. While Lanning finds the boundaries with her finesse, Shafali’s combination of timing and placement troubles oppositions regularly.

Another fast start on the cards in #DCvMI? We certainly hope so!

Enticing Player Battles:

Jess Jonassen vs Hayley Matthews

In the previous match, Jonassen got rid of two right-handed batters. Considering Hayley Matthews falls in that category, it will be a fascinating duel to watch.

Jonassen has scalped 91 wickets in WT20Is, the second-most by a bowler in the format, Matthews, meanwhile, has registered two impressive knocks in the TATA WPL. The West Indian all-rounder has also amassed 1500-plus runs in this format internationally.

Meg Lanning vs Nat Sciver-Brunt

The Australia-England rivalry is expected to kick up a notch in DC v MI. Nat Sciver-Brunt has been handy with the new ball upfront. On the other hand, Meg Lanning has been milking runs in the powerplay.

Getting past MI’s new ball attack will be key in posting or chasing down a total. Lanning, with her experience, will be adept in taking on the swinging challenge of Nat Sciver-Brunt early on. It promises to be another interesting battle.

Jemimah Rodrigues vs Saika Ishaque

Jemimah taking on MI’s leading wicket-taker Ishaque in the middle and death overs will be worth a watch!

Ishaque, so far, in TATA WPL 2023 has bowled at an economy rate of 5.16, while picking up six wickets. She has been crucial for MI in restricting the opposition scoring freely.

However, Jemimah has been in great form for us. With rapid and unbeaten cameos of 22 and 34, she has taken DC over the 200-run landmark in both matches.

This battle of skill and will at a flat deck on the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy will be one to keep an eye out for.
