Lanning and Jemimah shine on a tough night against Mumbai Indians

We returned to Dr DY Patil Sports Academy for our top-of-the-table clash against Mumbai Indians. However, an all-round display from the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side halted our winning streak in the TATA WPL.

Meg Lanning maintained her remarkable form with the bat with a gritty knock. Supported by Jemimah Rodrigues, with whom our skipper put up a solid partnership, Meg looked in fine fettle. However, MI restricted us to just above the three-figure base mark as we put on 105 runs in 18 overs.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai openers formed the backbone of a successful run chase as, despite our brave fight, the night ended with our first defeat of the season.

Meg Lanning’s fighting Captain’s knock:

Against a tricky bowling lineup, our skipper Meg Lanning started cautiously. The powerplay was all about trying to keep wickets in hand while the MI bowlers were on the ascendancy.

However, the wickets of Shafali Verma and Alice Capsey restricted our scoring early on. While Kapp, too, was dismissed early, Lanning held the fort.

Along with vice-captain Jemimah Rodrigues, our skipper stitched an impressive partnership in tough conditions. That hat-trick of boundaries against Amelia Kerr oozed class, typical Meg Lanning!

The Meg-Jemi duo roared at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, raising a 50-run partnership in testing conditions. Jemimah, too, showcased her fine display of shots in a brave counterattack.

However, she was also dismissed soon, followed by our skipper’s wicket. Lanning, meanwhile, scored 43 off 41, forming a formidable resistance against the MI bowlers, who had their tails up early on.

The lower order put on a fight, including Radha Yadav’s stunning maximum which left us in awe.

While wickets kept tumbling, our girls battled past the 100-run mark.

A Dominating MI Batting Attack:

We needed early wickets to stay in the hunt. Marizanne Kapp, Shikha Pandey and Co. put in the hard yards, trying their best to disrupt the MI openers. However, Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia weathered the early storm of our girls.

While scalping wickets remained difficult for us, our skipper marshalled her troops impressively on the field. Everyone gave it their all until the very last ball.

However, our sitara Tara Norris, once again, jostled her way into the wickets column. The USA international trapped Bhatia plump, which was her sixth wicket in the TATA WPL.

Alice Capsey got us our second breakthrough, deceiving the in-form Hayley Matthews, getting her caught at long-on. Jemimah caught what we can only define as a blinder!

However, Harmanpreet Kaur, along with Nat Sciver-Brunt, took Mumbai Indians over the finishing line.

Silver Linings from a Tough Day at Work:

Despite our defeat, there were a few positives to take back from our outing against Mumbai Indians.

Meg Lanning looked impeccable opening the batting. In tricky conditions, our skipper held it together piling on the runs. Now, with 185 runs in just three matches, Lanning maintained her firm grip on the Orange Cap.

On the other hand, Jemimah Rodrigues was also the silver lining, showing her counterattacking abilities in tough situations. Not to forget, that stunning catch to dismiss Matthews. It surely got all of us out of our seats!

Time to pick ourselves up, dust off and go roaring again on Saturday. We take on Gujarat Giants on Saturday, March 11, once again at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy.

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 105 in 18 overs (Meg Lanning 43, Jemimah Rodrigues 25; Issy Wong 3/10) lost to Mumbai Indians 109/2 in 15 overs (Yastika Bhatia 41; Tara Norris 1/4, Alice Capsey 1/14) by eight wickets.
