MI v DC | A Dominant Win To Top The Table

After a disappointing defeat against Gujarat Giants last week, we made a comeback and a half against Mumbai Indians with a thumping win by nine wickets.

Playing the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side again at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai, we aimed to learn from our mistakes from the reverse fixture and bag a crucial win. From an explosive start to a classy finish, our girls played bravely with the intent of finishing on a high in this battle of the best.

Meg Lanning won the toss and put MI to bat first on a turning track with the idea of reducing them to a low total.

The decision turned right for us as we charged in with the same Playing XI as our last match.

KAPP-tivating Start:

Making early breakthroughs a habit, Marizanne Kapp gave us back-to-back wickets in the third over. Kapp gave the best start we could ever ask for by dismissing Yastika Bhatia and Natalie Sciver-Brunt, MI’s attacking batters.

The very next over was special by Shikha Pandey. She took out MI’s other opener - Hayley Matthews, another danger-women on the opposition side.

Jemimah Rodrigues relished another flying-in-the-air moment to dismiss Matthews at mid-on.

MI’s dismal run continued as they registered their lowest score at the power play (19/3).

Arundhati Reddy joined the wicket-taking party by taking out Amelia Kerr for just eight runs. A smart delivery edged Kerr which was completed perfectly with Taniyaa Bhatia’s catch behind the stumps.

Slight drizzles at Navi Mumbai could have been a spoilsport for the match night. However, our bowlers took matters into their hands for a continued fall of wickets instead.

Splendid Bowling Attack:

Jess Jonassen, who has proved to be another consistent wicket-taking bowler didn’t fail to perform her magic today. Pooja Vastrakar was looking in good touch for MI but all their dreams were shattered with Jonassen’s fuller delivery. Vastrakar walked back after making 26 off 19 which included three fours and a six before she found Radha Yadav with a superb catch at long-on.

Next up, was a bubbling partnership between Harmanpreet Kaur and Issy Wong. Changing the strike almost every ball, MI hoped to put a decent score on the board. It was Shikha Pandey once again, who took advantage of MI’s tumultuous time. Rodrigues beautifully finished Harmanpreet’s inning at mid-wicket, celebrating with her classic floss dance!

For the last over of the first innings, MI was up against Jess Jonassen, who again proved to be right on the money. She took out Issy Wony for 23 off 24 as a simple catch landed in Lanning’s pair of safe hands.

To add to MI’s gloom, Jonassen took yet another wicket on the last ball. Amanjot Kaur ran hard for a tempting double but Rodrigues was quick on long-on for a lightning throw that resulted in a run-out.

Completing their 20 overs at 109 at the loss of eight wickets, MI were in deep trouble as DC ensured to rip their batting order.

Talented Top Order:

Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma looked poised yet determined as they came out to chase down 110 runs for a win.

Our skipper made no delays for the mincemeat of MI’s bowling attack. We scored at least 10 runs for every over in the first five overs.

Alongside Lanning, Verma continued to set the mood with magnificent boundaries to ensure that we continued to score at a solid pace.

However, Matthews and Yastika’s stumping targeted Verma as she charged outside for a big shot.

This drawback did not stop Lanning from continuing the attack. She kept adding runs on the board as Alice Capsey joined in at Number 3.

Capsey understood the assignment and hit sixes all over the park. Both Matthews and Saika Ishaque had taken 3-wicket hauls in the reverse fixture. Capsey served the sweet pie taking DC to 110 in just 10 overs with 66 balls remaining!

Our power squad proved why they sit at the top of the table in the current TATA WPL standings. They proved that the D in Dilli girls stands for complete Dominance. Remarkable performances in the first innings were followed by sheer confidence in the second innings to seal a win!

With the fond memories of Lanning’s sixes and Kapp’s almost hat-trick, we look forward to ending our league stage of the inaugural TATA WPL with another win against the UP Warriorz on March 21 at the Brabourne Stadium - CCI, Mumbai.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 110/1 in 19.4 overs (Alice Capsey 38*, Shafali Verma 33; Hayley Matthews 1/27) beat Mumbai Indians 109/8 in 20 overs (Pooja Vastrakar 26, Issy Wong 23; Marizanne Kapp 2/13).
