MI v DC | Qualification Done, Fight for Top Spot

About four weeks ago, Delhi Capitals  found a new zeal for the inaugural season of TATA Women’s Premier League. We brought together the best of all talents around the globe. Alongside Coach Jonathan Batty, we formed an invincible squad. A squad, so talented, that today we stand qualified for the TATA WPL playoffs.

Skipper Meg Lanning and our girls took the celebrations a level higher.

As we progressed in the tournament, our hearts knew only one song.

For our season opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore, our girls donned the DC colours  for the first time. We were elated when our Stargirl, Tara Norris, the only player from an Associate Nation in the TATA WPL, took the first 5-fer of the inaugural season.

Just in our second match, our Skipper Meg Lanning proudly graced the orange cap.

As our girls continued to roar for two consecutive victories, we felt beloved as our families came to cheer for us from all over the world.

The on-field action continued with Jemimah Rodrigues taking a blinder to stun the crowd.

Our girls surfaced as one of the most balanced sides because we won three out of four matches.

Time and again, our other opener, Shafali Verma showcased her best skills.

And just when we thought we had the best opening combination, coming in at Number 8, Arundhati Reddy painted the town with DC blues and red.

Fans filling the stadium with DC flags reinstilled our faith. With another crucial clash around the corner, all we can say is:

Our next challenge is up against Mumbai Indians on March 20 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai. We walk into this clash on the back of a loss against the Gujarat Giants, our second this season. On the other hand, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side also comes on the back of a huge loss, their first, against the UP Warriorz.

With an added boost of confidence in our den due to the qualification scenario as our girls continue to sweat it out in the gym.

We Are Excited For:

Consistent Top-Order

Our openers, Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma hold the record for the highest number of runs scored (162) and the best first-wicket partnership so far in this inaugural tournament. Courtesy of our batting power, we have crossed 200+ runs in an inning twice this season.

Radha Yadav, The Catcher

In six matches, Radha took five catches (the most by any player so far) including an outstanding stunner when we locked horns with UP Warriorz.

Excellent Record By Venue

Another spectacular record made and maintained by our girls is that we have won three out of four matches we played at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy. Our girls will put their best foot forward to register our fourth victory on this ground.

Battle Of The Best:

Harmanpreet Kaur vs Meg Lanning

Scoring 205 runs in five innings, Harman has hammered at the strike rate of 166.66. On the other hand, Meg Lanning has scored 239 runs in six innings with 36 fours, the most number of boundaries by any batter so far.

Saika Ishaque vs Jess Jonassen

In the reverse fixture, Saika Ishaque bagged the Player of the Match award for her bowling figure of 3-0-13-3. Jess Jonassen, DC’s one of the best all-rounders so far, will look to turn the tide against Saika Ishaque. We are waiting for these two left-handed stalwarts to come face to face as another thriller is on the charts.

Marizanne Kapp vs Hayley Matthews

In DC’s last match against the Giants, Kapp’s 36 inched us closer to victory. Both, the only Protean in the DC den and the only West Indies player in the MI dug-out, have lived up to the expectations of their sides.

Their face-off promises a close encounter in the top-of-the-table clash.
