VIVO IPL 2018: DD’s Top 5 Bowling Performances

#5 – Fiery Khan Rocks KKR

Having already impressed with some raw pace and steep bounce on his DD debut, Avesh Khan kept up his form in his second game of the season against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Prithvi Shaw (62 off 44) and Shreyas Iyer (93* off 40) steered us to a mammoth 219/4, giving the bowlers plenty to defend.

After a tidy first over, Avesh Khan used the short ball to good effect yet again, dismissing Nitish Rana for 8. Coming in lower down the order, Andre Russell landed some lusty blows. But, Khan got rid of that threat as well with an accurate yorker. From there, DD cruised to a comfortable 55-run victory.

#4 – The Pride of Nepal Bags a Three-for

Sandeep Lamichhane came into our final game of the season against MI with a couple of strong performances behind him. In that particular game, he took it up a notch. Skipper Shreyas Iyer handed Lamichhane the new ball, and he didn’t disappoint. The first two deliveries went for boundaries. However, Sandeep held his nerve and came back to claim the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav.

The 10th over of the innings, Lamichhane’s second, was where the Mumbai Indians probably lost the game. The teenager picked up the crucial wickets of Pollard and Krunal Pandya in the same over to put MI on the backfoot. They’d lost half their side at the halfway mark and Lamichhane had done his job for DD with his first VIVO IPL three-for.

#3 – Plunkett’s Dream VIVO IPL Debut

A wicket in his first over, a wicket in his second over, and a wicket in his third over! What more can a debutant ask for? Liam Plunkett is an experienced campaigner in the international circuit, and he used all his experience to good effect in this incredible bowling effort.

Well-disguised slower ones and deliveries well over the 140 kmph mark, Plunkett mixed it up really well to claim the wickets of the talented Karnataka trio playing for the Kings XI Punjab - KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair. Three wickets at an economy rate of 4.25 is a stellar T20 bowling effort!

#2 - Boult’s Stranglehold on CSK

Trent Boult ended the season as our highest wicket-taker with 18 scalps to his name. He had consistent performances throughout the season, but this one stood out. The eventual champions were left with 163 to get in their 20 overs, a par total at best.

As usual, Boult started off right on the money, giving away just three runs in the first over. In his second spell at the death, Boult conceded a paltry 9 runs from overs 18 and 20, when CSK required 55 runs from the final three. He also got rid of both MS Dhoni and Bravo in this phase. Boult had bowled two out of the first three overs and two out of the final three. To return with figures of 2/20 having bowled the most difficult T20 overs is something special.

Amit Mishra’s match-winning abilities came to the forefront in this fine display of wrist spin. Mumbai Indians needed this victory to get into the Playoffs, and Mishra denied them that opportunity emphatically. MI were running away with the game in a chase of 175 with 57/1 on the board at the end of the powerplay. Enter Amit Mishra.

Ishan Kishan was dismissed off the first ball after the powerplay. In his next over, he sent Evin Lewis packing. After a solid start, Mishra had dismissed two batsmen quickly to give the MI dugout some scares. In his final over, he tossed one up to tempt Hardik Pandya. He took the bait and top-edged one for a simple catch. Mishra’s 3/19 sealed victory for DD in their final game, a sweet way to end a bitter tournament.
